4 Tips For Parenting A Young Child

December 21, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Having a young child can be a very hectic but rewarding time in your life. They likely need a lot of your time and attention and are just starting to learn and grow and become a bit more independent.

Each stage is different and brings about new challenges. You must give yourself some grace and be proud of yourself for doing your best. However, that’s not to say you can’t improve and learn some new pieces of advice for success.

There are four tips for parenting a young child you may want to consider if you’re looking for some guidance when it comes to child-rearing.

1. Give Them Your Undivided Attention

One tip for parenting a young child is that you should spend more quality time with them. Not only make more time for them but give them your undivided attention when you’re with them. They may not feel very connected or that you care if you’re always on your phone or distracted.

Plan activities that you two can enjoy and do together and then put in a greater effort to be present and in the moment. You’ll discover that you start to grow closer and understand each other better over time. Remember to be verbal as well and tell them you love them and care for them too.

2. Get Them Involved in School & Activities

You’ll need to start thinking about school and activities even from a young age. You’ll need to make decisions in this area about where to send them to school and what to get involved with.

There are several reasons why you may want to consider sending your child to a Christian preschool over another. Weigh your options and do your homework to figure out what you believe is best for you and your child. Speak to your spouse and friends and family and see what input or suggestions they have for activities if you’re at a loss.

3. Be Flexible & Adaptable

Parenting is a tough job and some days you may feel defeated. Keep in mind that sometimes you need to adjust your approach and ways a bit when parenting a young child. They may be testing you or maybe their needs are changing but you aren’t changing with them.

Remain flexible and adaptable and notice how much better your relationships get and that you come to a mutual understanding on some topics. The truth is that there is no playbook when it comes to being a parent so you must observe and be prepared to change your method.

4. Demonstrate Positive Habits

Your child is always going to be watching you and what you’re doing and saying. Be a good role model by demonstrating positive habits every chance you get. For example, exercise regularly, cook healthy meals, and make getting enough sleep a priority.

They’ll see you living a healthy lifestyle and will want to mimic your ways. If you notice them observing you and asking questions then use it as a chance to teach them something new or explain why you’re doing what you’re doing so they understand.
