Growing Old Is Tough For Seniors

November 25, 2019 by Pam Maynard

While hairstylists have made silver hair one of the latest fashion trends, we are still far from fully embracing the challenges of senior living. For a lot of aging adults, growing old is a difficult and painful experience. Social expectations dictate that wrinkles and white hair are not an attractive look. We spend far too much on anti-aging cosmetics to claim otherwise! However, the problem doesn’t only focus on physical appearances. Indeed, society encourages us to think of seniors in terms of usefulness.

Growing Old Is Tough For Seniors

Unfortunately, getting old affects our cognitive and bodily functions, which, to put it simply, means that we become useless to others. It is a harsh statement. While many of us would hate to think of their relatives in such hurtful terms, the truth remains that most old people struggle to feel part of a society that doesn’t believe you can be relevant in your silver years. Is there an expiry date before which people should be best used?

It can be an isolating experience

Age creates insurmountable barriers between people. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Indeed, staying connected to your social circle as you grow older doesn’t need to be a challenge of every day. Making sure your elderly relatives are still part of family meetings is a priority. While it’s not always easy to make it work and to make time for seniors in the family, it’s important to plan get-togethers and regular contacts for and with them. You can organize significant birthdays and holidays together, ensuring that your great-aunt, for instance, is always part of the invites. Admittedly, your family needs to work together to help seniors along the way. But keeping the bond alive is crucial to their mental health.

What happens when independence is at risk?

Growing old can make every little routine stiff and difficult. Seniors worry a lot about losing their independence, as a result of cognitive or physical disabilities. Many fear the day when they can’t go to the shop to buy their groceries anymore, or when they can’t take a shower by themselves. Indeed, we have all grown used to the idea of nursing homes, where old people are sent to live their last days. For many, the nursing home is a terrifying prospect that feels dehumanizing. In reality, you can find other options such as the Parke assisted living facility, which accompany older adults with dignity in their everyday life. Indeed, losing your independence doesn’t have to mean you can’t enjoy life anymore.

Growing Old Is Tough For Seniors

It can make you feel inadequate

Almost half of the US population – 45% – is aged 50 or older. Baby boomers make up a large portion of the world population. Unfortunately, most of the technology developments fail to target the aging population. Failure to train seniors leaves them stuck in an ancient world where they can’t benefit from tech progress. From keeping in touch with relatives via Whatsapp to making the most of a smart home system, old adults feel out of touch with the modern lifestyle.

While we all dream of a long and fulfilling life, most of us forget to consider the challenges of old age. Indeed, seniors are more likely to struggle with social isolation, the loss of their independence, and the inability to catch up with the modern lifestyle. Making society senior-friendly needs to become a priority for all.
