Children with asthma need access to clean airflow wherever they are, but especially at home, where they spend most of their time. As asthma attack can develop any time, and some can be serious or even life-threatening. Parents of asthmatic children should take a proactive approach to maintaining clean air in the home by taking steps like these.
Use Clean Air Filters
Many people change the air filters on their furnace and air conditioner once a year. However, the filters in homes of asthmatic children should be changed more frequently to ensure the air is kept clean year-round. Depending on the type and condition of HVAC equipment in the home, the filters may need to be changed quarterly, or as needed. Use HEPA filters when feasible.
Dust and Vacuum Frequently
The home’s surfaces and furnishings that require dusting should be dusted with a damp cloth to prevent the dust being recirculated by dry fabric or fibers. A duster with an electromagnetic charge is also effective. Vacuum sweeper bags or collection cups should be changed frequently to ensure the sweeper continues to pick up residual dust and debris.
Keep Pets Well Groomed
Indoor pets should be routinely groomed to rid their fur of dust mites, fleas, and skin danger, which are common allergens and may be asthma triggers for some kids. Pets that go outdoors should have their feet wiped with a cloth or on a mat to avoid spreading dirt or plant pollen that could bring on a child’s asthma attack.

Asthma and allergy experts recommend washing family members’ bed sheets and linens on a regular basis, preferably weekly. This helps to remove dust mites and their eggs, which is a major allergen and asthma trigger for many.
As the parent of an asthmatic child, you want to do your best to ensure their well-being. In addition to the four tasks above, it is also important to have the air conditioning system inspected, cleaned, and maintained by HVAC experts at least once a year to avoid major air conditioning repair.
