Tips for Making Turkey Cookies with Kids
Making these adorable Thanksgiving turkey cookies is a fun activity to enjoy with the kids! Little hands will love adding the candy corn feathers, silly eyes, and colorful beaks. Here are a few helpful tips to make decorating easier and even more fun!
- Use your favorite cookies. Keep things simple by using store-bought cookies, refrigerated cookie dough, or your favorite homemade cookie recipe. Let the kids help choose their favorite flavors!
- Get creative with the turkey faces. If you don’t have Nutter Butter Bites, mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups make a cute alternative for the turkey’s head.
- Have fun with the red wattles! Instead of red decorating icing, try small pieces of red gummy worms, Twizzlers, Airheads, or red sprinkles. Kids will love choosing their own decorations!
- No candy eyes? No problem! Use black decorating icing or black sugar pearl sprinkles to give your turkeys their adorable expressions.
- Set up a decorating station. Before you begin, arrange the candy corn, candy eyes, Nutter Butter Bites, and other decorations in small bowls. This makes it easier for kids to grab what they need and create their own turkey cookies.
- Work quickly with the melted chocolate. Chocolate can set fast, so have everything ready before you start decorating. An adult can handle melting the chocolate while the kids arrange their turkey decorations.
- Reheat chocolate if needed. If your melted chocolate starts to harden, microwave it at 50% power in short intervals, stirring until smooth again. Be careful not to overheat it, or the chocolate may become thick and dry.
Make it a Thanksgiving tradition! Let everyone create their own silly turkey cookie, then arrange them on a festive platter to share with family and friends. It’s a sweet way to make holiday memories together!
