Chocolate Heart Cake Ingredients:
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temp
- 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 ⅔ cups flour
- ⅔ cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
Filling Ingredients:
- 3 cups marshmallow fluff
- 1 TBSP vanilla extract
- 1 ⅓ cup butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Directions for Heart-Shaped Cakes:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Add butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and egg to the bowl of an electric mixer and mix until creamy.
Pour in the buttermilk and mix well.
Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt to the mixing bowl and beat until smooth.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Scoop the batter into a large piping bag or a gallon ziplock bag with the tip snipped off.
Pipe heart shapes, evenly spaced, onto the prepared baking sheet.
You should be able to fit eight on a standard-sized baking sheet. Hearts should be approximately 2 – 2 ½ inches wide at the largest part.
Bake for 9 minutes or until cakes are spongy and spring back when you press lightly on them.
Cool completely on a cooling rack.
Directions for Filling:
Add butter and vanilla to the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until creamy.
Add marshmallow cream and mix well.
Add powdered sugar and mix until smooth and fluffy.
Add the frosting to a large piping bag and pipe evenly onto 8 of the heart cakes.
Top with the remaining eight heart-shaped cakes.
To keep the whoopie pies firm, store them in the refrigerator.
