Food coloring (optional)
½ tsp baking soda
1 tbsp saline solution
1 container

Instructions:

Slime process

In a small bowl, pour out 5 oz of white glue.

Slime process

Add ½ cup of water and stir until the glue and water are fully mixed together.

Slime process

Add a few drops of food coloring if you want to color your slime. You can also use paint, soap colorants or pigments.

Add ½ tsp baking soda and stir. This will help determine your slime’s thickness.

Add 1 tbsp of saline solution. Stir quickly. The slime will begin to form and pull away from the sides of the bowl. The saline solution will determine your slime’s stickiness.

Once the slime has pulled away from the sides of the bowl, knead it for a few minutes. It will still be sticky at first. That’s ok.

Keeping Your Slime Perfect: Storage & Maintenance Tips!

Want your awesome slime creations to last and last? It’s super easy to keep them fresh and ready for play!

  • Airtight is Right: The number one rule for slime longevity is an airtight container! Think small plastic food containers, zip-top bags (squeeze out all the air!), or even old contact lens cases for tiny batches. Keeping air out prevents your slime from drying out and getting crusty.
  • Cool & Calm: Store your slime in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extreme heat or cold can change its consistency. If it gets a little sticky, a tiny bit of baking soda or contact solution (depending on your recipe) can often bring it back. If it’s too stiff, a drop or two of lotion or hand sanitizer can sometimes help soften it up.
  • Clean Hands, Happy Slime: Always wash your hands before playing with slime! Dirt, oils, and crumbs can break down your slime’s texture and lead to mold over time. A clean play surface helps too!

Safety First: Slime-Making & Playtime Precautions

Slime is tons of fun, but it’s important to keep safety in mind, especially with little ones!

  • Adult Supervision is Key: Always have an adult present when making and playing with slime, especially if borax or other chemical activators are used. Even with “safe” ingredients, supervision ensures proper handling.
  • No Eating! This one’s important: Slime is for playing, not for eating! Make sure kids understand it’s not food, even if it smells good. Keep ingredients like borax and liquid starch out of reach of children and pets.
  • Watch for Allergies & Irritation: Some people can be sensitive to ingredients like borax, glue, or even certain food colorings. If anyone experiences skin irritation (redness, itching), stop playing with the slime immediately and wash hands thoroughly. Consider using borax-free recipes if sensitivity is a concern. Always wash hands after playing with slime.

Why Do Kids Love Slime so Much Right Now?

Kids are obsessed with slime right now because it’s so unique and new. This likely caused the craze to last so long; it’s a sensory experience that kids have never experienced before, and they love it. It’s also why there are so many different slime brands available right now.

Kids can create their own unique sensory experience with a brand of slime they love and identify with. Don’t be surprised if the slime craze continues for a while yet. Kids are likely to be playing with slime for a long time!

Beyond the Stretch: Creative Slime Play Ideas!

Once you’ve mastered making and storing your slime, the fun doesn’t stop there! Slime can be a fantastic tool for creativity and learning.

  • Sensory Bin Fun: Add your slime to a sensory bin with small toys, beads, glitter, or even plastic bugs. Kids can explore textures, practice scooping, and create imaginative scenes.
  • Hidden Treasures: Hide small, non-porous toys (like mini plastic animals or gems) inside the slime and challenge kids to find them. This is great for fine motor skills and problem-solving.
  • Slime Art & Science: Use different colored slimes to create layered art in clear containers. You can also talk about the science behind slime – how liquids and solids combine to form a polymer! Experiment with adding different amounts of activator to see how the consistency changes.
  • Stress Relief Squeeze: For older kids and adults, simply stretching, squeezing, and squishing slime can be incredibly therapeutic and a great way to relieve stress or anxiety.
