Parenting often seems like a whirlwind of constantly-changing situations and demands. Despite this, there are some things that must always be remembered throughout development. The importance of some even extends well past childhood, so adults should pay attention for themselves, as well as their children.
Nutritious Eating
Habits are instilled at a very young age, particularly when it comes to diet. Developing children should be encouraged to try a variety of healthy foods. There will be things they do not like and this is fine. The taste buds of children are not as developed as adults, so their preferences can be erratic. Do not force the issue, simply move on to something else and perhaps try those foods again some other time.
Proper Rest
Children need much more rest than adults and require regular naps during the day. Sleep is not the only kind of rest children need. Down-time while awake is very important because it fosters patience, alertness and self-discipline. Make sure this quiet time is spent reading or creating, rather than engaging with media, the overuse of which can have a negative effect on children. Quiet time may be difficult to impose at first, but 10 to 20 minutes once or twice a day is all that is necessary. Children that do this regularly are generally happier and tend to perform better in school.
Interaction with Others
Healthy, adult-supervised peer socialization must begin at a very young age for most children. If not, the developmental issues that may result could be severe and long-lasting. It is important that children are not ignored or deprived of normal physical contact, especially during their early developmental years.
Introduction to Music and Art
Music and art are essential for nourishing the cognitive and emotional growth in young children. Motor skills, visual processing, language acquisition, decision making and social development are all enriched engaging children in musical and artistic activities. A music teacher who earned their master of music education online says songs can be excellent learning tools, as they can help children remember concepts better by putting them to music. Exposure to music and art allows children to learn how to express themselves, which can be a particularly important and useful skill set as their personalities begin to take shape.
Improving Language Skills
Reading to children is essential, but it is not the only way to boost language skills in children. As seen in the previous example, music and art can also be very helpful. Oral storytelling is another great way to engage the developing verbal and linguistic skills in children. Since there is no need to focus on a text, the visual centers in the brain are freed up when listening to a story. This allows for more engagement and cultivates a greater interest in reading.
While parenting is difficult, attention to these areas mentioned above are less parts of the challenge and more things that will make the job easier. Your child stands to benefit greatly from your attention to their health and development throughout their early years.
