Candy Cutoff: Tips for Perfecting Your Family’s Balanced Diet

September 27, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Living a healthy life is all about staying active and eating a well-balanced diet. While there is most definitely a stigma associated with the term diet, in actuality, healthy eating is not all about restrictions and limitations. Parents have a duty to establish healthy eating habits in their children at a young age so they know what to select in adulthood and what to eat in moderation. Instead of depriving your loved ones of foods they love, perfect a nutritional plan that includes varied menu items that are both healthy and tasty. Here are some tips to commit to healthy eating and how to stick with it.

Candy Cutoff Tips for Perfecting Your Family's Balanced Diet

Make it a Habit to Fill Up on Fruits and Veggies
Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, and even antioxidants that are capable of fighting disease. Not only are the properties beneficial to your health, both fruits and veggies are low in calories so you can eat a large serving without feeling guilty. Unfortunately, most families eat too many snacks and too little of the above, and most Americans need to double their fruit or vegetable intake. Instead of eating a candy bar or a cereal bar that you assume is healthy, have your family fill up on nutrient-rich fruits and veggies as after-school and work snacks.

Learn The Proper Plate Portioning
Overeating is becoming a norm in today’s world. With buffets, over-sized plates, and endless appetizers, many of us eat well after the tank is full. Cooking well-balanced dinners at home with proteins, grains, vegetables, and the components in the food group is important, but you need to make portioning on the plate a habit as well. Make sure you know a portion of protein should really only be 4 to 6 ounces. Your starches should be only about the size of your fist, and the empty space on your plate should contain veggies. By filling half of your plate with colorful veggies, you will avoid temptations to overeat or to consume large amounts of high-calorie foods.

Substitute “Unhealthy” Food For Healthy Alternatives
It is a trend these days to cut out breads, pastas, rice, or other carbohydrates entirely. Unfortunately, people who do this are draining their body of an important energy source. Instead of cutting out bread, use a healthy alternative. If you eat turkey on white bread, eat it on Klosterman Baking Company wheat bread that is 100% whole grain. You will get energy and the fiber your body needs, and get more nutrition out of it as well.

Perfecting your family’s well-balanced diet is about limiting bad fats, reducing sugar intake, and eating nutrient-rich options. Surprisingly, you don’t have to use the word diet with your family to instill better habits. Start making gradual changes and they may not even notice they are eating healthier.
