Four Things You Need To Discuss With Your Elderly Parents

September 11, 2015 by Pam Maynard

As much as we may not like to think about it, it is an inescapable fact that our parents are growing older. It is important that we develop and maintain on-going communication with them on issues that can affect their health. Opening a dialogue is an excellent first step towards helping our elderly parents enjoy the best quality of life possible in their later years.

4 Things You Need To Discuss With Your Elderly Parents

Diet And Nutrition

As our bodies age, our nutritional requirements change and appetites may wane. It is important to ensure that your elderly parents are eating the right foods, in sufficient quantities, to maintain their health. Discuss adding a good multivitamin to their daily routine to help supplement their dietary needs.

Exercise

With a doctor’s approval, moderate exercise can help maintain good health, strengthen endurance, and ease some of the aches and pains associated with the aging process. Swimming and walking are two examples of good exercises that can improve heart health, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and improve overall health.

General Medical Conditions

Encourage your parents to discuss any health issues they may have with their family physician. Cardiac problems, COPD, Alzheimer’s Disease, and other conditions present their own special challenges. It is vital to your parents’ health that they understand and comply their doctor’s directions for effective management of any health conditions they may have. If you notice any unusual changes, talk with your parents about your concerns and, if necessary, discuss it with their physician. In many incidences, early intervention is the key to successful treatment.

Proper Dental Care

One often overlooked area of senior health is proper dental care. If your parent is experiencing episodes of diminished appetite, it may be due to an undiagnosed dental issue. Untreated dental issues can have a significant impact on their health. Fortunately, today’s elderly patients have more options available to them for replacing damaged or missing teeth. One option to consider is having dental implants, say the experts at Art of Dentistry Institute. Dental implants can help stop bone loss in the jaw. This is especially important with conditions such as osteoporosis, which tend to get worse as a person ages. Dental implants can help to increase bone growth over time and use, thus helping to stop future bone deterioration.

Make time to discuss these important issues with your elderly parents. Their health during this time is critical, and having these conversations early enough can prevent future heartache and confusion.
