My Thoughts
First of all, any toys that get or keep my kid active without needing scary Mom supervision are okay with me! Since I have little kids of both genders and various interests, I couldn’t just give them both the exact same item. But I still wanted toys to keep them moving, especially when they are playing in the garage when the weather is bad OR the rare winter day where they won’t freeze after five minutes of being outside.
So for my little man, we got him a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles skateboard. His friend across the street has one and we have a skate park in our town so he was really looking forward to learning to do tricks. I suggested he learn how to ride it first though, and made sure he has his protective gear like helmets and pads on since the child can’t hardly walk without tripping over his feet. His Dad suggested he learn how to stand and balance on it first before he tried to zoom down the driveway. After a few wipe-outs, he started to get the hang of it. The most fun he has with it currently though is sitting down on the board and having the other kids sling him down the driveway (while the parents are watching for cars). I’m okay with this, honestly, because I’ll take his laughter and screams of delights over injuries and frustrated tears any day.
The board seems pretty big to me, so I think he’s going to be able to grow into it and use it for the years to come. And it has his favorite Turtle characters on it so it’s definitely a hit with him!
As for my little princess, she is all about cartoon princess characters, movies, and TV shows right now. I can tell you a detailed life history and plot lines for a number of animated cartoons on the various networks because she loves to play dress up and pretend while the shows are on the screen. And when her brother got a skateboard, she wanted one too, but we went with the Disney Frozen Electric Scooter instead.
I appreciate that it has a rechargeable battery and each charging session will give her about 40 minutes of drive time. We simply put it on to charge at bath time so it’s ready for the next day. I don’t have to worry too much about her tipping over because the board itself is balanced over three wheels, and all she has to do to make it “dwive” is hit the red button. When she lets go, it quickly cruises to a stop. Now, the only thing she still needs to get the hang of is watching where she’s going instead of staring down at the ground that is passing by LOL! And yes, we still require a helmet just in case she runs into obstacles…like the patio table, garage wall, or the bookcase.
And for extra fun, my son has figured out how to squeal the tires while he makes sharp turns (and she is asleep so as not to see & get upset). So it’s fun for both of them, as long as the owner of it doesn’t know what her brother is up too!
Either the TMNT skateboard or the Disney Frozen Electric Scooter would be great for either outside play time or in our basement. I’m not worried about them tearing up the concrete floor so much as maybe scratching up the wood floors when the wheels are roughed up from the driveway and sidewalk play. Be sure to put on their safety gear too because even princesses and turtles can get hurt on accident!
