My husband and I have been dog lovers are whole lives. When we were first married, we had five dogs and they were our “furry kids.” We always told our friends, it’s good practice. If you can take care of a puppy, you’re that much closer to being ready to parent a 2-legged kid! It’s true. You love your pets so much because they love you. They just don’t love you when they feel like it, they love you unconditionally.
Recently, we lost a very special dog to us- Marley our Border Collie in the picture below. It’s still painful to talk about him and write about him but it is getting easier. He was the smartest, most intuitive dog we have ever owned. He always knew when you needed him to lay next to you, he always knew when you needed to be left alone. His eyes were a true reflection of his gentle soul. He was my husband’s best friend- they went everywhere together, Home Depot, to the bank, to the dump or just for a ride. Marley loved to ride!
When we had to make the decision to put him to sleep (he had a brain tumor and declined rapidly) it tore our hearts apart. It wasn’t fair that a dog as good as Marley had to die so young. He didn’t deserve to suffer either but we couldn’t imagine life without him. He always was a shining star that brightened your day. He loved to give hugs and everyone loved Marley.
We waited 5 months before looking for another puppy. We didn’t think a puppy would replace our Marley, but we knew it would help us heal the hole in our hearts.
We found Bean, or maybe he found us. He was born just a few days before Marley passed over the Rainbow Bridge. We didn’t realize this until after we had gotten Bean, this spunky little Rough Coated Border Collie. Bean has brought that smile back into our lives. I didn’t think I could ever look at pictures of Marley without crying, but now we look at puppy pics of Bean and Marley and see how they both had that herding instinct from the beginning. They may not look alike, but they both fill our hearts with love and love US unconditionally. They are MORE than just dogs: They never just sit next to us. They remind us that they want to be there with us. They never just lick our faces. They calm us down and comfort us. They never just take us for a walk, they take us on a journey.
Just like our dogs, Milk-Bone is making treats that always do more. Taking what was once a treating occasion and turning it into an opportunity to care. Milk-Bone. Inspired to do more.
Did you know that Milk-Bone is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with Canine Assistants, a non-profit organization that trains and provides service dogs to children and adults with physical disabilities and special needs. They have created this heartwarming video that shows how dogs are more!
Yes, Dogs are more! The video shows how much we need these dogs as much as they need us. It’s amazing the things they can do to help their parents stay healthy and safe. Who knew that dogs could tell when you had high or low blood sugar? How amazing is that? I know a few people that have assistance dogs just so they can get up the courage to leave the house. Their dogs have rescued them from a life of depression and darkness.
