Give Dad the Gift of Age with the SteakAger #review #SuperDadGifts17

June 11, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Dry-aging steaks is something that we hear about ordering in fine dining restaurants. What would happen if you could dry age them right in your own home? Now you can. The SteakAger is a machine that fits right in your refrigerator and will dry age meat to perfection.

Dry aging steak is a process by which large cuts of beef are aged for anywhere from several weeks to several months, before being trimmed and cut into steaks. Dry aging helps to develop the flavor and it also makes the steak tender.

The Steak Ager allows you to do this process right at home. When it came to me, I was a little confused because i was sent a box of parts. So, after taking each part out of the box and studying it for a while, I pulled up the SteakAger website and scrolled around.

I found the assembly directions and got started. Once I figured out that I wasn’t smart enough, my husband came into the kitchen and showed me up by putting it together very easily. It really wasn’t hard except the pegs that hold it together have to be taken apart before using them. It just makes it easier.

There are two racks that can be used for aging. The neat thing is that you can age at different times. For example you can place a piece of meat on the top rack on Monday and a different one on Friday. The website that you connect to will keep track of the time for you! The website also keeps track of the temperature and humidity. How cool is that?

I cleaned out the fridge and put the machine inside. I took the cut of beef that my husband brought me to age (he’s a classically trained chef, so he would know), and put it in the machine. I plugged it up, connected it to the wifi (as per instructions) and have been letting it do its thing.

Each time I look in the fridge, I wonder if it’s okay, but it is. The beef looks really red. But, that’s what it’s supposed to look like. When it’s finished aging, it’ll have to be trimmed up and the, if the weather cooperates, be thrown on a charcoal grill to be cooked.

Waiting to try this is killing me! I wish it could be done faster, but that’s the aging part. It takes about 2 weeks from start to finish, although, some websites say longer, some say shorter. I’ll go with the 14 days so that I’m sure it’s good and aged.
