Parenting Outside of the Box: How to Encourage Your Child’s Individuality

March 25, 2017 by Pam Maynard

If you love having children because you want to see who they become, then you’re definitely an outside-the-box kind of parent. And one of the ways you can see who your child is becoming is by encouraging them to do activities that express who they are. Here are a few fun ways you can encourage your child to become who they are becoming.

child's individuality

School Supplies

If you have a kid that has an artistic bent why not encourage the child to decorate their school supplies? Buy them a plain three ring binder, glue sticks, colored pencils and pens, and other art supplies. Other decorative options include magazines and old photos.

Have them decorate the outside of the notebook with their names, different designs, quotes that mean something to them, and other pictures that express who they are. As a bonus, no one else in class will have this notebook, reducing the likelihood of it getting mixed up with another child’s book.

Through Fashion

Have you ever bought clothes for your kids thinking they completely pair with their personality? If you have, then you know that fashion is one of the best self-expression tools around. However, it’s one thing to buy clothes off the rack but it’s another thing to create your own. Helping your child make their own T-shirts with screen printing materials, like Schilling Graphics has, is a way to get them to create their own clothes. Of course, you may have to help them with the technical details of it. Another idea is that you could give them glitter and sequins and all manner of things to put on their T-shirts.

Write it Down

Sometimes, you need to know how you feel and what you think about things before you can express your individuality. Journaling is one way that a person figures out who he or she is. If your child loves writing, why not buy them a journal? As with the notebook, they can decorate it on the outside and on the inside, especially if they love art journaling.

However, there are more benefits to journaling than just being able to express oneself, according to the University of Rochester. Journaling teaches you learn how to talk about their fears. By getting your child a journal, you not only allow her to express herself but you also encourage her to manage her fears.

Playing Music

Learning to play an instrument is another way your child can express him or herself. The process of discovering who you are is just that, a process. It turns out that music is the same. As a child becomes more developed and mature as a musician, he or she will be able to start composing their own music to express how they feel and what they think.

It’s important for children to feel comfortable being themselves and not like they have to conform to what the world tells them they should be. Hopefully, the above tips will be able to help your child become their own person.
