How Can Parents Teach Their Children to Make Good Life Decisions?

March 19, 2017 by Pam Maynard

One of the most important jobs that a parent has is to raise a child who is mature enough to make smart decisions. However, this is not something that is inherent in human nature. Instead, a child must be taught what it means to make smart choices and the consequences of making poor choices. How can parents teach their kids to make the right choices in life?

Model the Behavior You Want to See in Your Kids

If you want your son or daughter to make good choices, you have to show what they look like. Instead of eating pizza for dinner every night because you are too lazy to cook dinner, start making meals at home. It will show your children that the long-term benefits of a healthy lifestyle outweigh the short-term benefits of not having to cook.

Let Your Child Make His or Her Own Decisions

In some cases, the only way to learn how to make good decisions is to have experience making decisions in general. For instance, you may want to give your child an allowance so that he or she can learn how to manage money. You may also allow your child to determine his or her own bedtime over the summer to help him or her learn to balance the desire to stay up late with the effect it may have the next day.

Talk About the Legal Consequences of Breaking the Law

The criminal justice system is full of people who made poor choices and are paying for their actions. By getting an online criminal justice degree, you can learn how to talk to your children about the consequences of making poor decisions that break the law and result in trouble. If grounding your child doesn’t deter them from making poor choices, the thought of going to jail might.

Help Your Children Figure out What They Want

The hardest part about making good choices is that they aren’t always the obvious decisions. For instance, you don’t know if spending $50,000 on a college degree is better than spending $50,000 on a house until time passes and you see the results of that decision. However, making smart decisions may be easier if you know whether you value going to college over owning a home.

If you have children, it is your job to teach them how to think critically and carefully. This is done by being a good role model, being there to talk when your kids have questions and by letting them learn through their own successes and failures.
