5 Foods You Would Never Expect To Help Your Eyesight

August 26, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Your vision is the most powerful sense you possess. Our eyes are one of the key components that allowed human beings to become the most dominant species on Earth. Without our excellent vision, our ancestors would have been easy prey for the many dangerous predators they had to contend with. Because the eyes are so important, it can be scary if your eyesight starts to diminish. One of the best ways to prevent this is to eat foods that are good for your eyes. Here are five foods you probably didn’t know can actually improve your eyesight.

5 Foods You Would Never Expect To Help Your Eyesight

1. Spinach

It’s not just good for Popeye. Spinach is one of the healthiest foods anyone can eat. Spinach is packed full of a vitamin called lutein. Lutein helps to protect your eyes by forming pigments that help to filter out UV radiation. This prevents the common age-related disease called macular degeneration that causes weakened vision and even blindness in older individuals.

2. Oranges

Everyone knows that oranges are one of the best sources of vitamin C. However, not many people realize that vitamin C is actually really good for your eyes. In fact, vitamin C helps to strengthen the connective tissue that composes the corneas, and this helps to prevent cataracts.

3. Dark Berries

Any berry that is dark in color is good for the eyes, including blackberries, blueberries and bilberries. These dark berries help to increase blood flow to the eyes, improving eyesight. They seem to be especially good at improving night vision. Dark berries also contain loads of anthocyanins, which help to prevent cataracts and macular degeneration.

4. Almonds

Almonds are high in vitamin E, which helps to prevent free radicals from causing damage in the eyes. All About Eyes recommends that patients sprinkle some almonds on their morning breakfast cereal to help protect their vision.

5. Eggs

Eggs have gotten a bad rap over the years, but they are really starting to make a comeback with all the health benefits they offer. Eggs are loaded with vitamin E and lutein, which both do wonders for boosting eye health and protecting your vision.

As you can see, you do not have to go on the Bugs Bunny diet to keep your eyes healthy. There are many foods other than carrots that you can eat to help keep your vision strong. Be sure to add these five healthy eye foods to your regular diet to keep your eyes healthy and your vision superb.
