Fun Family Fitness Activities to Get Everyone Moving

August 19, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Many kids of this generation are always glued to their gadgets or plopped in front of the television. They don’t run out of games to play on their mobile device or TV programs to watch, but they are missing the benefits of playing outdoors. This is not surprising, because many parents themselves are guilty of spending hours in front of their mobile phone or tablet. Like adults, children need to stay active. It helps them develop their motor skills and muscle strength. It improves their cardiovascular activity and makes their bones strong. Exercise doesn’t only bring physical benefits, it also promotes overall well-being. It’s not yet too late to start an active lifestyle. Do it as a family so you can inspire one another. Here are outdoor activities you can try to make exercise fun for everyone.

cycling

FamilyCycling

If your kids can already ride a bike, schedule a “bike day” where everyone rides his or her own bike on from your home all the way to the park or anywhere it would be safe to ride. Kids love to bicycle and they would love it even more if they will do it with you. Cycling is a great muscle workout. It makes all major muscle group work, leading to increased strength and stamina. You can do it regularly, say, weekly or every other week and reap the benefits of regular cycling.

Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport, but you can do it as a recreational activity. It is an excellent way to get outdoors, explore nature, and learn new skills and exercise. It mostly takes place in hills, forests, parks or sand dunes. It is a fun and healthy way to bond as a family for you will work together to select routes and walk through an unfamiliar terrain. You can start by choosing easy courses and walk, run or jog to maintain your fitness. It is family-friendly, for courses for every age group are offered.

4-Fun-Family-Fitness-Activities

Swimming

Swimming is a sure hit with the kids. It also makes a fun family activity if you think of ways on how you can make it more exciting for everyone. If the kids do not know yet how to swim, teach them or enroll them in swimming lessons at an early age. Swimming is a life skill that everyone should learn. It is also an all-around fitness activity that keeps the heart and lungs healthy, and the muscles strong. When they already know how to swim, think of swimming games or water activities you can do to make swimming time more enjoyable and worthwhile.

Ball Games

Ball games are a sure way to get the kids out and moving. You don’t need fancy equipment and you can do it on your own yard. Get everyone involved and choose from a variety of classic ball games such as run down, flinch, say and catch, down and many others. Everyone will surely sweat out and feel energized. You do not have to worry about sweating, because it triggers the release of endorphins, your feel-good hormones.

Fitness activities need not be dull and boring. Make the most of a fine weather by going out, sweating, breathing fresh air and getting your much-needed exercise. It will help you appreciate the beauty of nature, spend quality time with family and encourage everyone to stay active. Nothing is better than a family helping each other on their journey to a healthier life.
