4 Summer Activities to Get Your Kids Off the Couch and Out the Door

August 6, 2016 by Pam Maynard

When you have children who love to play video games or watch television all day, it is difficult to get them outside in the summer during their school break. You can plan family activities instead that require getting outside where there are fun things to do. When children play outside, they are less likely to gain weight, and with a physical activity, your children will strengthen their muscles and bones.

Summer Activities

Going for a Swim

Your child cannot resist going for a swim at an outdoor swimming pool or local beach location. Make sure to bring along beach towels to relax on the sandy beach or on lounge chairs, and before sunbathing, apply a lot of protective sunscreen lotion. To ensure your children stay outside as long as possible, pack pails for building sand castles and beach balls for playing games.

Horseback Riding

Every child wants to experience horseback riding, and it is a great way to get your children outside in a natural setting such as a meadow or forest. If you are a novice rider, then visit a dude ranch that offers trail rides with a trainer. You can pack a lunch to carry in a saddlebag on a horse to enjoy a family picnic.

4 Summer Activities to Get Your Kids Off the Couch and Out the Door

Bird-watching

Take your children bird-watching in your local neighborhood or at a nearby park in order to see warblers, cardinals and blue jays. To make it easier to see the birds that are flying in the sky or nesting in the trees, bring along a pair of binoculars to share. To get your children outside in your own backyard, hang birdhouses and bird feeders that attract robins, finches and hummingbirds.

A Family Garden

If you are having problems getting your children to eat fresh vegetables and fruit, then plant a family garden. Not only will your children enjoy eating the tasty produce that they pick, but also, working in a garden requires getting outside in the sunlight. An important tip is making sure that each child has their own section in a garden to plant seeds. For best results, the experts at Central Farm and Garden recommend you plant at the appropriate time of year. Research the length of the growing season to stagger your harvest, and you won’t have to do too much back-breaking work on one day of the year.

After your children become accustomed to going outside for a family activity on a regular basis, they may want to spend more time outside on their own. It is important for your children to have a hobby that involves enjoying nature. By taking your children on family activities, they may develop a lifelong interest in gardening, bird-watching or horseback riding.
