Top 10 Summer Health Tips For Your Toddler

April 9, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Who doesn’t love the summer? Picnics, swimming, outdoor barbeques are just some of what you have to look forward too. As a parent to young children, you’ll want them to fall in love with summer just like you did. But, while summer can be a magical time for your kids, it does have its set of risks. Dehydration and exhaustion are quite common complaints with heat strokes being one of the most severe. So, to ensure that you have a good time without any of the pitfalls, here are 10 of the top health tips to keep your toddler safe this summer.

  1. Have Them Drink Plenty Of Water:

This one is quite evident, but you’d be surprised how many parents neglect it. Drinking plenty of water is important for a child, and helps overcome dehydration and heatstroke. Get your toddler his own bottle and make sure he has it on him all the time, so that he becomes accustomed to used to drinking extra water.

  1. Protective Gear

While you want your children to go out and get used to playing outdoors, you should be watchful of their surroundings. Children tend to fall quite easily. Make sure that they have appropriate protection.

  1. Eat Healthy

As adults, we can get caught up in the summer hype and neglect our diet. This is even more important when it comes to your little ones. Prepare your children’s meals in advance and keep their meals at the same intervals. This will ensure you don’t have last minute struggles trying to get them some food.

  1. Beware Of Plants

Again, if you’re outdoors, make sure to be careful around plants. Certain plants can set off allergies in children and can cause rashes that are hard to treat. There also plenty of poisonous plants that could put your child in danger. Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac are the most common plants.

  1. Sleep On time

For growing children, getting enough sleep is essential. Lack of sleep can leave them cranky and lifeless and even stunt growth. Make sure they get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep and an evening nap if possible.

  1. Swimming

These days, parents encourage their kids to swim and become accustomed to water from a young age. If you want your child to enjoy a refreshing swim, make sure it’s only the kids pool, and he has plenty to stuff to keep afloat. His ears need to be covered as well.

  1. Prevent Burns

Half of all burn-related accidents happen to children who are under the age of four. Be watchful every time your little one is near a stove or an outdoor grill. Never leave them unattended in these situations.

  1. Avoid Food Poisoning

In the summer, your probably going to be eating outdoors. If your kids have been running around playing, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly. Food poisoning can be quite uncomfortable.

  1. Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen is an essential must have for the hot summer season. Not only does it prevent skin damage, but it can also prevent heatstroke. Pair sunscreen with a good hat and the sun won’t be able to harm your children.

  1. Carry A Safety Kit

It’s always better to be prepared. If you’re in a remote location and your child gets a cut, you wouldn’t want to have to go searching for them in a hurry. A box with a few band aids and some disinfectant will go a long way in ensuring your child gets immediate medical treatment

This summer is a great time for you to introduce your children to the great outdoors. As they explore, make sure that you have their safety in mind. Keep these ten tips in mind for the summer and your child is sure to be healthy and happy.
