Chocolate Chess Pie #Recipe

December 29, 2015 by Misty Stephens

Disclosure.New.3

Chocolate Chess Pie has long been a favorite dessert in the South.  It is simple to prepare, but it is not a simple taste.  The custard-like texture, silky sweet flavor, and crisp top layer make this dessert a standout crowd favorite.  It is one of my dad’s favorite pies, so I set out to make one for him and my family.

As I had hoped, my dad loved his pie! AND my family loved the other pie (which we had to try; Quality Control is such a hard job!)

My children are already begging for me to make my Chocolate Chess Pie again!

Chocolate Chess Pie Recipe

Ingredients (makes 2 pies):

  • 2 nine inch pie shells
  • 1/2 stick melted butter
  • 4 Tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 twelve ounce can of evaporated milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Allow pre-prepared pie shells to stand at room temperature while preparing the filling.  (Set on top of the oven while preheating if your home is cool.)

Beat sugar, cocoa, and eggs until well combined.  Add melted butter and evaporated milk. Beat for an additional two minutes.  Add vanilla and mix until incorporated.

Place empty pie shells on baking sheet. Divide filling between two pie shells.

Bake pies for 40-45 minutes.

Tip:  Before you remove your pies from the oven, gently shake the pie. Pie is ready when the filling is set/no movement when shaken.

Serve Chocolate Chess Pie warm or cool with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
