Restless Toddlers? 4 Tips for Setting Their Sleep Schedule

November 14, 2015 by Pam Maynard

The terrible twos are popularly known as the time when toddlers begin their disastrous tantrum phases. Between teething, growth spurts and learning how to walk and talk, toddlers experience a lot in a short space of time.

1. Remove Electronics

According to the National Sleep Foundation, it is wise to turn off electronics before bedtime because the light emitted from electronics promotes wakefulness. It may be tempting to surf the web on the tablet while winding down or let the little one watch their favorite shows before bedtime, but it can actually help them stay awake and prevent consistent sleep patterns. If their bedtime is 8 pm, turn off the electronics and begin winding down around 6:45 pm.

4 Tips for Setting Their Sleep Schedule

After dinner, allow them to enjoy a bit of playtime. Fill that last hour with relaxing rituals to help them get to sleep. Consider a warm bubble bath with their favorite toys. This still allows them to have fun while winding down. After they’ve dried off, put on lotion and changed into their pajamas, close the blinds and dim the lights for story time. After a nice story, allow them to peacefully rock to sleep.

2. Be Firm

Children are incredibly convincing and will work hard to get their way. In their eyes, extra time on the smart phone or television is a lot more fun than sleep. Initially, children might throw temper tantrums at the new change. However, as the parent, it is vital to stand firm and not budge. Children will push, but they can only do what they can get away with. Be firm and remember this is for their health benefit.

3. Provide Proper Nutrition and Water

People often underestimate the power of proper nutrition and water on a consistent basis. If a child is constantly fed sugar-laden foods, their bodies will be wired. Instead of artificial and processed foods, try fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks. Incorporate more leafy greens in their meals and choose water over juices filled with sugar. Additionally, consider using a natural sleep supplement from companies like TeddyMD LLC to help balance their melatonin. This can dramatically aid in the quality of their sleep and decrease irritability during the day.

4. Use up Energy

Adults are usually amazed at the amount of energy children have. However, this is the time when they need to use it up. Plan fun events and activities for children to use up their energy and earn their sleep. It is difficult to keep most toddlers still. They usually want to move around and have fun. Make sure they have time to spend the energy and they’ll fall asleep easily by bedtime.

These tips might take some time and practice, but it is important to remain consistent in achieving an optimal sleep schedule. There might be tears and resistance, but before long, the toddler will feel more rested, happy and healthy!
