Dog’s Domain: What Your Pooch Needs in its Area of the House

September 22, 2015 by Pam Maynard

Your new dog will appreciate a dedicated spot in your home that it considers its “den.” You should outfit the doggy area with the following items to have a happy, healthy dog.

A nice doggy bed.

While most pooches are content to sleep directly on the floor, larger breeds of dogs will appreciate a cushioned spot for snoozing. These dogs often suffer from hip issues as they age, so providing a padded bed for these pups will keep them far more comfortable when they rest. Smaller dogs appreciate a nice place to curl up, too. Use places like DiscounTrue to find the best offers for petsmart.com when finding a good deal on a bed that has an outer covering that can be removed and washed to keep doggy’s “bedroom” tidy and smelling fresh.

Protection from harsh lights and noise.

Create a soothing ambiance for your new dog by using dim lighting in its designated area. Use lower wattage bulbs or nightlights to help reduce stress on your dog during rest times. Making certain that the doggy spot is not close to noisy appliances or stereo speakers will also aid in keeping your dog calm and happy while resting.

Environmental comfort.

Heat rises in winter, meaning a pet who lives close to the floor may feel colder than you do even if the heat is blasting out of your home’s floor vents. Protect your dog’s special zone from drafts in the winter, especially if your pet is a short-haired variety. Consider doggy sweaters for pets who shiver, and periodically sit down at the dog’s level to judge whether their area is warm or cool enough. In summertime, consider running a cooling fan in the doggy spot, and make sure your dog has an oversized water bowl that’s always kept full.

Relief from boredom.

Add new chew toys, doggy bones, and stuffed animals to your pup’s toy collection from time to time. Fresh playthings will keep your dog from feeling bored and may save other household items from being chewed to bits. Some dogs enjoy a radio or TV in their domains to provide background chatter. Dogs have great hearing, so you can keep the volume very low while giving your dog a way to hear human voices and soothing music.

Certain breeds of dogs may have other needs, including secure sleeping crates, extra grooming tools, and even room humidifiers. Ask your veterinarian about any breed-specific items they recommend for your beloved dog’s canine cave.
