8 Things (Good And Bad) Every Modern Day Parent Deals With On A Daily Basis

August 18, 2015 by Pam Maynard

The rewards and obstacles that modern day parents face are as plentiful as they are varied. An age entrenched in technology and disassociation, the things new age parents face are drastically different from issues of the past.

Video Game Drama

Whether it’s losing a game, not being able to agree on which game to play, or simply too much gaming, in general, the average parent in this age is often tasked with being the video game referee of sorts, many times per day. It’s important to establish rules that aren’t changed so your kids know what to expect when it comes to video games.

8 Things (Good And Bad) Every Modern Day Parent Deals With On A Daily Basis

Technological Tutorials from Your Kids

No matter how smart we are as parents, our kids will always have a better grasp on anything technological. Born into the world with technology that was merely dreamed about when you were a child, they clearly have the upper hand.

Trying to Sell the Great Outdoors

Another issue most modern parents face is that of trying to convince kids to put down the games and go outside and play. Many parents struggle to make excuses just to get their kids to go outside and soak up some sun. Consider fun activities they can do with siblings or friends. You should also choose a time of the day that they won’t be able to use phones, computers or videos games. This gives them the option to play outside without you having to force them out there.

Social Media Mayhem

Rather than hearing about the real life argument that one of your kids had with a friend, you are more likely to be consoling your child due to some words publicly posted on a social media network. Different from pre-Facebook days, nevertheless, hurt feelings remain the same. Your child should know what to do and who to talk to when it comes to bullying, even if it’s just online.

The Unkindness of Strangers

In addition to dealing with social media issues with people your children know, there is also the added element of having to defend your parenting and your children’s actions against total strangers on the internet. It’s important to remember that not everyone will have the same opinion, and you shouldn’t feel the need to always defend the choices you make as a parent.

Disney Sing-a-longs

Disney songs are cute, until they’re not. It may be funny at first, but around the 100th time, you may be looking into figuring out how to block the channel altogether. Encourage your kids to watch new movies to keep it interesting around the house. Looking up Disney quotes can also help them remember other parts of the movie they liked, not just the one song that stuck with them the first time.

Forgetting Your Kids are Just Kids

Children grow up so fast these days, it’s easy to forget they’re not as old as they seem. There’s nothing like your child actually needing your help for something to give you a gentle reminder to take it easy on them.

Inappropriate “Age Appropriate” Programming

Times have certainly changed. Parents must be extremely mindful of what they allow their kids to watch, as “Rated-G” just isn’t what it used to be. You should be prepared turn off shows and block certain channels that contain content you don’t want them to see.

Overall, although much about parenting has changed, the most important aspects like love, understanding, patience, and humor are timeless and universal.
