Parenting 101: How to Convince your Kids that Going to College is Important for their Future

July 25, 2015 by Pam Maynard

According to a recent New York Times article, almost half of college students drop out. Even worse, the job market is still over saturated and unstable. Successfully completing college is important for personal development, career stability and earning potential. Below explains how to convince your kids about the importance of finishing college.

Parenting 101 How to Convince your Kids that Going to College is Important for their Future

Scared Straight Program
Kids often struggle to understand the financial difficulties of maintaining a career, raising a family and paying for cars and a house. Consider involving your kids with important financial decisions. Show them the family budget and let them do the math. Offer to buy your kids items that they want, if they can reduce costs and save money. Once they realize how easy it is to fall into debt and how difficult it is to budget, explain how much more degree holders earn. Help them understand that a degree will allow them to afford the things that they want in life.

Take a Fun College Class
College isn’t just about tests and teachers, there are many opportunities for personal growth. In fact, college can be one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences. Consider having them first take classes they are interested in at a local community college. Encourage them to make friends, go out and have fun. Learning to socialize and network is equally as important as getting good grades.

Graduate from Home
One of the easiest ways to convince your kids about the importance of college is through the convenience of online schooling. Many kids rightfully think that attending college consumes too much time and energy. Encourage them to pursue an online education from the comfort of their home. For example, a UF bachelor degree online is a convenient way to finish school with plenty of free time for personal interests and socializing.

Supersize Your Kids’ Experience
One of the best ways to impress upon your kids the importance of college is to show them what their future job will be like without a degree. That is, encourage your teenager to work at an entry-level fast food or retail job. A month of working at McDonalds or Wal-Mart will be an excellent motivator to pursue higher education. On the other hand, if they want to pursue a liberal arts degree, encourage them to start working at Starbucks now.

In conclusion, there are useful ways to convince your kids that college is important. It will more than likely help them have a better career and financial future later in life.
