4 Ways to Give Your Family Pet the Longest Life Possible

December 20, 2014 by Pam Maynard

Adding a pet to the family is an important responsibility. From the right nutrition to regularly scheduled trips to the veterinarian, you’ll find that a lot can go into your pet’s proper care. In order to help your pet live a long and happy life, you’ll want to factor in the following helpful tips.

4 tips to give your #pet a long and happy life

Proper Nutrition

With the long list of foods on the market today, you may find it overwhelming to know which brand will provide them with the right nutrition. In addition to doing your own research, your vet can provide you with suggestions on the best high quality foods that can help extend your pet’s life. You should also supply them with plenty of fresh water and limit the number of treats.

Regular Check-Ups

In order for your pet to maintain its health and wellness, you need to factor in regular visits to your veterinarian. Similar to a human physician, a veterinarian can check for any health concerns. They can also provide your pet with vaccinations that can help prevent illnesses and prolong their life. If an emergency situation arises, you’ll also need to bring your pet in for an examination. Since this can often be a stressful time for both pet and owner, you want to find a skilled and compassionate place such as the Brimley-Lawrence Animal Clinic. From spaying and neutering to vaccinations and boarding, reputable places such as this can bring the family peace of mind.

Grooming and Nail Trimming

Even pets who are able to groom themselves need some additional care. Daily brushings can make their coats more lustrous and manageable. It can also get out knots in pets with longer fur. Nails will also need to be trimmed periodically. If you don’t feel comfortable handling this responsibility on your own, a professional pet groomer or vet can handle these duties. This is also a great time to clean your pet’s ears and brush their teeth.

Obedience and Training

Starting off with the right relationship comes with proper training and obedience. This establishes rules early on such as sitting, no jumping, staying off furniture and coming when called. Introducing pets to a variety of social situations is also crucial and pet training can help them adapt better to children, adults and other pets. You should also make time for play time and long walks. Exercise and games can stimulate a pet and keep them at a healthy weight.

Helping your pet maintain a long and healthy life is dependent on good nutrition, a solid bond, and the understanding of what can harm and help them.
