Healthy Beginnings: How to Start Your Kids’ Lives off Right

December 7, 2014 by Pam Maynard

A parent cannot entirely control the environment in which children are raised. This is especially true for families or single parents with more-limited incomes. A smart plan can create stability even when living in a stressful environment, and careful nurturing can help kids make their own smart choices one day. It is possible to get your child’s life off to a great start without smothering.

Keeping a Safe and Loving Home

This is one of the hardest goals to achieve, but parents can do it even without much money. There might be bad people in or near the neighborhood, but the home should always be a refuge. This means love from parents, and a supportive environment. Adult content should be removed, because this should be a nursery rather than a bachelor pad. Smart choices begin with the environment of strongest influence.

Seek Expert Developmental Advice

Most children grow naturally, although some have mild disabilities that can be overcome with a little assistance. Some children fail to learn particular subjects while others have physical disabilities such as poor eyesight and weak joints. Some of the most important development, however, occurs in the womb itself. Speaking with a high-risk obstetrician such as Dr. Gilbert Webb in St. Louis or a physician near you allows parents to gain the information they need to live healthy lives during pregnancy and give their children the best chance at strong early development. Pregnant mothers can address serious issues early, and a little knowledge can create a lot of happiness.

Healthy Diet for Growth and Future Habits

If parents eat junk food, then kids will eat junk food now and long into their adult lives. Healthy food does not have to be disgusting, and simple cooking can even make lean meat, fruit, and vegetables seem preferable. Diet affects brain development as well as weight and health, so it pays to eat smart every day. The entire household should share in a smart diet.

Speak to Your Children About Social Scenarios

Kids of all ages hate to be lectured, but they all want to advance themselves among peers and to stand out as more mature than they really are. Using this appeal can get them to listen to good advice. Vague advice is not as effective as looking at specific examples. Looking at the news and history are sources of real world situations. This starts the process of critical thinking and can avoid faux pas that sink opportunities.

Most kids will turn out just fine with love and a few opportunities. Parents who do take proactive roles in grooming their kids will often see real results. While nothing is guaranteed in life, no one is hurt just by seeking. Plenty of great resources on the web offer extensive advice.
