8 Plumbing Problems You Should Never Ignore

October 19, 2026 by Pam Maynard 1 Comment

Is that drip under the kitchen sink starting to drive you crazy? Most homeowners overlook minor plumbing problems. A sluggish drain. A toilet that runs constantly. It never seems to add up to much… until it does.

Here’s the problem:

Little plumbing problems never correct themselves. They get bigger. And when they get bigger, you pay more:

  • Money on your water bill
  • Damage to floors, walls and ceilings
  • Stress you really don’t need

The typical home wastes nearly 10,000 gallons every year due to household leaks. That’s money literally down the drain.

The good news?

Catch the warning signs early and most of these problems are quick, cheap fixes.

Time to dive in!

Inside this guide:

  • Why Small Plumbing Problems Turn Into Big Ones
  • When To Call In Residential Plumbing Services
  • 8 Plumbing Problems You Should Never Ignore

Why Small Plumbing Problems Turn Into Big Ones

All your plumbing is concealed behind walls, below floors and underground. That’s why problems come as a surprise.

By the time you notice a water stain on the ceiling, water damage has probably been occurring for weeks.

Water damage also costs you money. From 2019 to 2023, 1 in 67 insured homeowners experienced a water damage or freezing claim each year. They averaged about $15,400 per claim.

Think about it:

It’s a ten-dollar washer or twenty-dollar toilet flapper that saves you from the five-figure bill. Prevention is always the point of early repairs.

When To Call In Residential Plumbing Services

Some fixes are easy DIY jobs. Others are not.

Fixing a leaky faucet or replacing a toilet flapper is DIY home maintenance most homeowners can tackle on a Saturday morning. Hidden leaks, smelly sewers and water heater issues require an expert touch.

That’s where residential plumbers come in handy. A professional plumber can locate the cause of a leak or clog, repair your pipes and drains correctly, and identify other plumbing problems before they become serious. If you live in upstate New York, a skilled Albany, NY plumber can inspect your water lines, drains, and fixtures and advise you on what to repair first.

Simple rule: If you can’t see where the problem is coming from, or if fixing it requires messing with gas or your main water line… call a professional.

8 Plumbing Problems You Should Never Ignore

Okay, now on to the red flags.  These are the 8 plumbing issues you should address immediately.

1. Dripping Faucets

A dripping tap seems harmless. Just a little “plink” every few seconds.

However, the EPA notes that a faucet dripping every second can waste over 3,000 gallons per year.

Most drips originate from a worn washer or cartridge. It is an inexpensive part and easy to replace.

2. Running Toilets

Does your toilet keep running long after you flush?

It’s one of the easiest leaks to spot but also one of the most wasteful. Normally, the flapper inside your toilet tank is worn out and no longer seals tightly. Which means water is leaking 24/7.

Fast leak test: Put a couple of drops of food colouring in the tank. Wait 10 minutes. If you can see the colour in the bowl before flushing, you have a leak.

3. Slow Drains

A single slow-draining sink is typically caused by a simple clog. Hair, soap scum and grease are the usual suspects.

But here’s the thing…

If multiple drains are slow-draining at the same time, the problem is likely lower down in your main sewer line. Also, stop flushing caustic drain cleaners down your sewer line. They can corrode old pipes even further.

4. Low Water Pressure

Weak shower? Taps that barely trickle?

Low water pressure can be caused by:

  • Mineral build-up in aerators and shower heads
  • A hidden leak somewhere in the line
  • Corroded or clogged pipes
  • A faulty pressure regulator

If cleaning the aerator doesn’t fix it and your whole house is affected, call for service.

5. Water Stains And Mold

Brown rings on the ceiling. Bubbling paint. A soft spot on the floor.

All of these indicate invisible water leaks. Mold can’t grow without moisture. Moisture means mold and, mold can harm your house and your family’s health — particularly if anyone is allergic or asthmatic.

Never just paint over a water stain. Find the leak first.

6. Sewer Smells

That rotten egg smell coming from your drains isn’t normal.

It may be an empty P-trap, a clogged vent pipe, or a broken sewer line. If the odor persists, call a plumber.

7. Water Heater Warning Signs

Your water heater works every day of the year. And just like anything else in your home, it will eventually wear out.

Watch out for:

  • Rusty or discolored hot water
  • Rumbling or popping noises
  • Water pooling around the base
  • Hot water that runs out fast

Rumbling is typically sediment buildup inside the tank. Flush it annually, and you’ll be fine. However, if your tank is leaking, you need to replace it — quickly — or else it will flood your basement.

8. A Spinning Water Meter

Here’s a sneaky one most homeowners never check…

Shut off all the faucets and appliances that use water in your house. Check your water meter. If it is still changing, you have a leak.

An inexplicable spike in your bill (while nothing has changed in your water usage habits) is another huge red flag. Slab leaks and buried-line leaks can go unnoticed for months.

Pretty scary, right?

Bringing It All Together

Plumbing issues do not improve with age. A drip turns into a leak. A leak turns into water damage. Water damage turns into a very costly repair.

To quickly recap, keep an eye out for:

  • Dripping faucets and running toilets
  • Slow drains and low water pressure
  • Water stains, mould and sewer smells
  • Water heater trouble and a spinning meter

Repairing obvious household water leaks can save you about 10% on your water bill. Ten percent. For some turn-key work.

DIY the easy stuff. When it comes to anything hidden, recurring or complex, call trusted residential plumbing services and have it done correctly.

Your home (and your wallet) will thank you.
