Making Valentine’s Day Cards with Your Kids

Valentine’s Day is a special day for children to show appreciation for their friends and loved ones. Help your child make some homemade cards for a special touch for the special people in their lives. Making the cards with them can be cheap and a fun way to spend time with your children, but it can also be a way to see who matters most in their lives and talk with them about how much you love them.
Cards with Candy
- Flower Cards: Simply cut out an outline of a flower with five or more petals from colorful paper. A message can be written on the flower petals. Poke a small hole in the middle of the flower and insert a small lollipop into the hole. This will form the stem. Push the petals up around the lollipop.
- Rocket ship: This Valentine requires a roll of candy such as Lifesavers. Wrap the Lifesavers with foil or construction paper and glue a Hershey’s kiss to one end. At the back of the rocket, glue red construction paper cut into the shape of a flame. Write: “Your a Blast” on flame.
- Candy Stick Butterfly: This card needs a stick of candy. Cut out the shape of a butterfly that is the same length as the candy stick. Decorate the butterfly wings and a message can be written on the wings. Tape or glue the candy stick to the center of the butterfly as the body.
- Gum Butterfly: Cut out two red hearts from construction paper. Tape them to a stick of gum to form the butterfly wings. Draw two eyes on the gum and antenna can be made from pipe cleaners or construction paper. Write a message on the wings or the gum.
Hand or Foot Valentines
Nothing is sweeter than the shape of a child’s hand or foot. Have your child make an outline of their hands or feet on colorful construction paper. Cut them out.
- Feet: Glue feet together at the heel. Small plastic gems glued to the toes make cute toenails. Write: “Your my sole mate” on the feet.
- Hands: The hands can be decorated in the same fashion with plastic gems as the fingernails. The hands may be taped or glued together or placed around an object such as a small bottle of lotion. Another idea would be to tape or glue a piece of candy in the palm of the hand.
A card that uses the child’s hands are a fun and easy toy for children to make. Cut out a heart shape with heavy, colorful construction paper. For this project several layers should be used so that the heart does not tear. Make each heart just a tiny bit larger so that it will have a different color border showing. Draw a face on the heart and a message can be written on the back of the heart. Cut out two leg holes. The child inserts two fingers through the leg holes to make the heart “walk”.
Another cute kid’s homemade Valentine can be made from playing cards. Pick out all the heart cards in the deck. Glue a heart with a smiley face on the top of the card and use pipe cleaners for arms and legs. A message can be written on the card with a permanent marker.
Valentine cards from the store are a fast way to get a lot of cards out to a child’s classroom, but a homemade card made with a little effort shows some thoughtfulness and caring on behalf of you and your child. In the home, children feel secure and at ease with family as you feel secure with the best home insurance protection. Take advantage of that to create special memories with your child. Making these cards with your child is time well spent together, teaching your child to be grateful for the loved ones and friends that are in their lives.
