4 Tips for Enjoying Your Winter Move Across State

4 Tips for Enjoying Your Winter Move Across State

Many household moves occur in the summer when children are out of school and the weather is pleasant. Families typically prefer summer for their moves, and even solo professionals often choose the dry roads and warm sunshine that come with this season. However, if you find in a winter move across state, you might actually be in for a treat.

Summer is peak season for professional movers, which means that dates can fill up quickly and prices may increase due to high demand depending on the area and services needed. If you’re working with a moving company across state, winter might offer more flexible scheduling and competitive pricing.

If you enjoy winter weather, look forward to a snowy drive, and don’t mind loading boxes with gloved hands and a chilly nose, a winter move could be just what you need.

Not everyone thrives in the summer, and many people don’t have schedules that revolve around this season. Those who choose a winter move across state will discover that professional movers are easier to book and more available for consultations during this quieter time. You’ll find that moving companies have more open slots, your schedule can be more relaxed, and the roads are less congested. With the right preparations for warmth, safety, and floor protection, you can truly enjoy your winter move.

1. Book a Time that Works Best for You

Winter offers the best flexibility for scheduling with your moving company. If your move is work-related, you can choose a time that aligns perfectly with your job and transition plans. If it’s for personal reasons, simply pick the most convenient time for you. If your moving schedule is uncertain, winter is the ideal time for professional movers to accommodate less-confirmed dates since their schedules tend to be more open.

Make sure to give yourself ample time to pack. You’ll want all your boxes ready by the time the moving truck arrives, and it’s wise to set aside some time for a final clean-up once all your boxes and furniture are loaded.

2. Plan for Weather-Appropriate Safety and Warmth

The main challenges of moving during winter are related to the weather, which can vary greatly by region. For instance, if you’re in Florida, icy roads are probably not a concern, unlike in Colorado. Be prepared for the conditions you anticipate. If it’s slushy or wet, lay down door mats and drop cloths to protect your floors.

For icy conditions, have driveway salt on hand for better traction. In case of rain or snow, utilize any covered porches and walkways, and cover boxes in transit with tarps. If you expect a mess, keep a stack of old towels nearby. However, if the weather is clear and dry, you can relax—winter moves don’t always have to be a hassle.

3. Prepare Both Homes to Receive Movers

To make your winter move smoother, it’s essential to prepare both homes. At your current place, ensure all boxes are packed, have a sturdy doormat at the entrance. Know which items you want to be loaded last so they can be unpacked first. Before the moving truck arrives at your new home, make sure the utilities are turned on and the heater is running. And have towels and drop cloths ready in case of bad weather. This way, you and your movers can warm up indoors while bringing in boxes and furniture.

You might also want to brew some tea or hot cocoa to stay cozy, depending on how cold it is outside and how biting the wind feels during trips to the truck.

4. Take Time for a Leisurely Car Trip

Lastly, make your way to the new house at a relaxed pace. Never rush on icy roads, and prioritize your health during the drive. Avoid getting too tired or dehydrated by taking regular breaks to eat, stretch, or even find a hotel room if needed. Double-check that your moving company across the state has a clear plan for transporting your belongings safely, especially if delays occur due to winter weather.

Keeping communication open with your movers ensures that your items are well-tracked and secure. You can plan your stops in advance or use your GPS to navigate a slow and careful journey over winter roads. If the drive is short, you can use this time to transport personal items from the move. For longer trips, stay aware of the weather to avoid getting stuck on the road.
