How to Travel Safely in Winter in the Family Car

December 9, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Make sure your family car is super safe for the winter season and avoid expensive or upsetting accidents. Winter is one of the riskier times for driving because of the freezing temperatures and black ice on the roads.

Find out more about maintaining your vehicle during the winter season.

Put your car in the garage for a seasonal service

Vehicle servicing is different for different cars and driving styles; some of them require a service every six months, while others rely on mileage.

That said, no matter what vehicle you drive, it’s a sensible idea to have it serviced before the winter season to make sure all your fluid levels are checked, and you have the right tires and wheels on the car to get the best traction on the road.

A seasonal service doesn’t take long, contact a local garage and book your car in for a check-up; you should have it back in a few days, ready to go, unless there is some work to do to make it safe for the season.

If the garage can’t change tires for you, you will have to go to a tire center for winter tires; make sure you have seasonal tires to reduce the chances of an accident.

Make sure the vehicle’s wheels are up-to-date

Winter tires are arguably the most important element of the winter vehicle service because they determine how much traction you have on icy roads. Winter tires are important, but you also need to drive carefully and be aware of the dangers on winter roads.

One of the main things drivers need to look out for is clear black ice that looks like the black tarmac of the road.

Changing the tires in winter can also be a chance to update your wheels, especially if you have some chrome ones. Throughout the year, chrome wheels become dull and discolored, not the way they should appear.

When you have chrome wheels, you want them to shine, especially during winter when using the car frequently; find out more about Chrome Restoration near me.

Carry out any routine repairs before the winter season

Putting your vehicle into a local garage for a winter service is the first step, but there might be some maintenance work to carry out, which you will have to take care of yourself unless the garage can do it for you.

Some mechanical repairs you need to look out for include the brake discs, plates, windshield wipers, and possibly a battery update to reduce issues.

If you want to save some money with your vehicle repairs this winter, you can carry out some of these repairs yourself after buying the parts online for less.

For example, windscreen wipers are easy to buy and install, and it’s worth buying an extra set in case they become damaged in the cold weather. A replacement battery is also worth investing in during the winter.

Keep some emergency equipment in your vehicle

If you are not used to breaking down, you risk being caught out during the winter season. A hundred things can go wrong with your vehicle during the winter. That’s why it’s sensible to have an emergency kit somewhere in the car to support you in the event of a breakdown.

There are a few essential items that you need to include in your toolkit.

Make sure you have an ice scraper and a can of de-icer in the vehicle to make sure you can see out of the windows before traveling on the road in the morning.

Most people think they are fine as long as they have their smartphone, but not if you can’t charge the device, make sure you have an in-car charger or battery. Jump leads and a tow rope are also sensible items to have.

Monitor the road conditions and possibly avoid driving

One of the best ways to avoid an accident on the roads this winter is to check the roads and avoid driving if possible. Download an app that tells you the road conditions, then test how comfortable you are driving in different conditions. Always listen to advice from local authorities.

Winter driving is the most hazardous type of driving, so you must ensure your vehicle is prepared and make smart choices throughout the season. It can be inconvenient to avoid driving at times, but it’s safer in winter when the temperatures are freezing, and glass has frozen.
