5 Tips to Stay Safe In A New City

November 29, 2022 by Pam Maynard

You already know that moving is stressful enough without worrying about staying safe in a new city.

Whether you’ve moved by yourself or have taken your family across the country to start over at an exciting new job, you need to think about how you will remain safe in an unfamiliar place. You can’t spend all your time indoors, so here are five tips to help you stay safe in a new city.

Protect Yourself

Protecting yourself seems like a redundant piece of advice, but you need to be prepared for it, especially if you are in an unfamiliar place.

Ideally, you don’t want to fight, but this doesn’t mean you can’t equip yourself with items like self defense keychains, pepper spray, or even tasers to give you the edge in case you encounter shady characters. The chances of this are slim but not impossible, so it’s worth having something to keep you safe.

Install Security Systems

High-quality security systems have become cheaper and more expected over the past few years. You don’t need to install bulky (and expensive) CCTV around your house or apartment, but you can still set up systems that will alert you if anyone tries to access your property.

It doesn’t matter if you’re at home; the system will notify you so you can take the right action, whether calling the cops or confronting the potential intruder to scare them away.

Plan Your Route

It’s easy to get lost in new environments, and you don’t want to walk into an unsafe area where you clearly don’t belong. Taking public transport (or driving yourself) is always safer, but if you need to walk, you should plan your route.

Walk through crowded and well-lit areas rather than taking shortcuts, as this could isolate you and put you in danger.

Make Friends and Acquaintances

The more people you know, the less likely you will find yourself without a support system. Making friends or acquaintances can help you feel safer and give you the peace of mind you need.

You should introduce yourself to your neighbors and get to know your co-workers. Similarly, getting out there and meeting other people at clubs or events can increase your social circle, giving you more chances to spend time with others rather than go out (or even sit at home).

Don’t Draw Attention To Yourself

There are many steps you can take that won’t make you a target and won’t draw attention to yourself. Don’t wear your most expensive jewelry when going out on the town, and don’t flash your cash.

You should also stick to wearing boring clothes, at least at first, as bright and bold colors can make you an easy target for theft or pickpocketing, especially in a crowd.

Staying Safe

You shouldn’t assume that all new cities are dangerous. This is an outdated idea, especially if you’ve come from quieter rural areas.

Still, you should ensure that you take the correct steps to keep yourself safe. These trips can give you the tools and confidence to head out whenever you want and ensure safety.
