6 Important Signs You Need to Call an Electrician

June 20, 2022 by Pam Maynard

Calling an electrician might seem like something you only do when renovating your home or building one from scratch. It’s easy to assume that every other related problem is something to tackle yourself to save money.

In reality, any electricity-related problem or concern should be managed with great care and can require a phone call to an experienced electrician. If you’ve noticed any of the following signs, now might be the right time to call an expert for assistance.

You’re Using Numerous Extension Cords

A phone call to a Squamish electrician might be necessary if you’re using several extension cords in one area to power your many appliances and electronics. While extension cords might be a convenient short-term fix, they can be hazardous. Alongside being a trip hazard, extension cords can also be a fire hazard, with thousands of fires caused by them each year. When you realize you’re relying on extension cords in several areas of your home, it might be time to call an electrician to install more outlets where you need them.

You Have Two-Prong Outlets

Many older homes have two-prong power outlets, which are no longer used in homes built today. Two-prong outlets only have hot and neutral wire connections, whereas new outlets have a third prong for a connected ground wire. Without this third prong, unstable electricity can’t travel safely away from your electrical system and you, which can be a safety risk.

You Notice Sparking

There can be as few things as stressful and worrying as seeing sparking in an appliance fixture or electrical breaker. Sparking can occur for many reasons, such as moisture, overloading, age, substandard repairs, and short-circuiting. It can be crucial to call an electrician immediately for peace of mind.

The Fuses Keep Blowing

Many people’s energy demands are greater than ever before, particularly as many homes now have a range of appliances, electronic devices, and even electric vehicles. If you notice that you’re frequently experiencing a tripping circuit breaker or blown fuses, you might be asking too much of your circuit. In this instance, you might need to move devices to other circuits or consider a circuit upgrade to accommodate your energy usage.

6 Important Signs You Need to Call an Electrician

You’ve Received Shocks

You might not think it’s a big deal to receive a slight shock as you turn on a light switch or touch an outlet, but it can be. Shocks from electrical systems, outlets, or light switches might indicate faulty wiring, which presents a genuine fire risk.  As soon as you notice this problem, refrain from touching power outlets and call an electrician for assistance immediately.

Your Outlets Are Hot

A hot outlet isn’t normal, and can be caused by overloaded circuits, loose wiring, or damaged wiring. Regardless of the cause, this might be a fire hazard that requires immediate addressing by an electrician. If you’re experiencing this issue, unplug anything connected to the affected outlets and call your local electrician.

It’s not always easy to know whether you have an urgent problem that requires an electrician’s services or something you can manage yourself. However, if you can relate to these situations above, it might be time to call an electrician without delay.
