7 Ways To Make Your Garden A Haven For Your Family

October 27, 2021 by Pam Maynard

We all want to be able to spend more time outdoors as a family these days. However, many pests and dangers are lurking that put us off getting outside and spending some much-needed family time. With just a few simple changes and additions, you can make your garden a haven that you will love getting your family out into.

Secure Those Pools

Any water source is a major worry for parents, especially with little ones. If you have any pools, ponds, or access to any body of water then putting up a fence with a gate that can be locked will give you a huge piece of mind. Children should always be supervised by a responsible adult around any water activities.

Pest Control

The last thing you want while enjoying your much-deserved family time is to sit there scratching. Of the 3000 different species of mosquitoes, over 170 species are in the USA alone. So make mosquito control a priority in your garden upgrade so make sure you can truly relax and enjoy your time outside without having to worry about bug bites and mosquito-borne diseases.

Landscaping

The kids will love to kick a ball or do cartwheels on the lawn with you. If you don’t have the time or confidence to do it yourself then get a landscaper in to help, they can ensure no awkward rocks in the way that could hurt the little ones as they somersault and practice their winning touchdown.

They’ll bring along real turf grass that offers a soft, safe surface for kids to play on. This will not only enhance the appearance of your yard but also provide a durable and low-maintenance area for outdoor activities.

They will also be able to ensure there are no poisonous plants for children or furkids. If you do not have time to maintain the lawn or just don’t have a great garden then artificial grass is a great alternative. Artificial grass that looks realistic enough won’t be bothering you and your kids.

Limit Street Access

If you have a front yard, consider a fence and gate to prevent your little ones or even pets from wandering into the street. You can opt for something high to ensure privacy or even DIY that little picket fence. Either one you decide on will just add to that little extra security in keeping your loved ones safe, from passing cars or strangers.

Zone Your Spaces

If space will allow for it, try to keep different areas separate for different activities. Make sure kids’ playsets are not near any grilling stations or too close to any fire pits. A great idea to differentiate spaces is a pergola to add some shade for those sweltering days or shelter when it rains. It can be a great space to entertain over holidays and special occasions.

Maintain Outdoor Equipment

Remember to check any outdoor playsets for any wear and tear as well as damage if they are exposed to the elements. Grills and firepits should also be maintained to avoid any problems.

Vegetable Garden

Starting a small vegetable garden is a wonderful way to teach your children healthy eating options that are easy to grow themselves, as well as the great rewards gardening brings. It is a fun and educational family project everyone can be involved in.

So adding just a few of these or even making upgrades to one or two of these will certainly make your outdoor space safer and improve your quality time together as a family.
