5 Low-Maintenance Pets for Your Kids

April 12, 2021 by Pam Maynard

Bringing a pet into your family can be a wonderful and rewarding experience. However, many responsibilities come with owning a pet. Your family lifestyle will need to be adjusted to accommodate a pet, and new routines have to be established.

The classic family pets are traditionally dogs or cats. Although both make endearing and lovable family additions, they come with great responsibility that may be impractical for younger children. Also, there may be issues with allergies that could cause trouble for you or your kids.

5 Low-Maintenance Pets for Your Kids

Thinking outside the box is the first step towards finding the perfect pet that both you and your kids will adore. All pets need a certain level of love and care. Even fish require essential maintenance and breeding choices like freshwater algae eaters to keep your tank healthy. Let’s look at a few alternative pets for kids that could be a welcome addition to your whole family.

Rabbit

Rabbits are the perfect pet for younger families. There are no heavy responsibilities like walking or the danger of damage to your home that comes with getting a pet like a puppy. Rabbits tend to do better when they get lots of attention or have another animal to socialize with. Daily care includes feeding, cleaning, and grooming. Most rabbits can be easily trained to use a litter box to keep your home cleaner.

Fish

Your kids will enjoy hours of watching fish play in their tanks. Owning fish can be anything from a straightforward endeavor to a complex tank system. Freshwater fish are generally easier to keep thriving with a less complicated water and tank routine required. The best approach is to start small and teach your kids about the basic care and needs of fish and tank environments. Once your family becomes more experienced, you can expand your tank and fish family as large as you want.

Chickens

Chickens are sweet little pets that offer both companionship and practical benefits. They require basic care (feeding, water, and egg collection), but like to be independent most of the time. Chickens can thrive in secure housing with a small outdoor space. They’ll provide fresh eggs for you pretty much every day, so that’s only a bonus for the family. They’re entertaining as well as loveable. Keeping them healthy is straightforward – even feeding them a natural dewormer meal requires minimal effort. Overall, they’re great to have and will teach kids how to be responsible for another being.

Lizards

Although lizards may seem like an odd choice of pet, they are a unique creature to introduce to your children. Lizards are cold-blooded and need specialized care. An excellent breed to start with would be a type of gecko that does not require the assistance of UV lighting for heat. Lizards have a wide variety of needs depending on the breed you bring into your family, so it’s essential to do your research before choosing your lizard.

Tortoise

If you are looking for a low-maintenance and quiet pet for your kids, you can’t go wrong with a tortoise. These gentle creatures will thrill and fascinate your kids and teach them a ton about the world of reptiles. Tortoises do well when they have a good amount of room to roam, so a larger pen is recommended as opposed to a tank. Tortoises have a big appetite that requires various foods, so make sure to do your research about diet before you bring home your first pet tortoise.

Adopt a Zoo Pet

There are zoos, animal rescues, and animal rescue organizations that are always in need of help. If your child is insistent on having a pet, but you just don’t have the room or the time to dedicate to an animal, adopting a zoo animal may be the answer. Your child will be able to donate to the care and maintenance of many animals that they can visit occasionally. This type of “pet” arrangement can help educate your child about the care of wild animals and the importance of charitable donations.

Adding a pet to your family takes a lot of consideration. If you want your kids to experience the unconditional love and responsibility of owning a pet, consider one of these unique animals to add to your family.
