How to Teach Your Teen to Be Resourceful While Still Making a Difference in the World

January 31, 2021 by Pam Maynard

If you’re like most parents, then you want to be able to send your child out into the world with a good head on their shoulders. You want them to make a difference in the world around them. Part of teaching them how to be unique is showing them tactics on how to be resourceful.

How to Teach Your Teen to Be Resourceful While Still Making a Difference in the World

Explain Where They Can Find Answers to Their Questions

One mistake that many parents fall into is answering questions for their children. Instead of answering their many questions, tell them where they can go to find the answer. For example, if they don’t understand what a word means, have them look it up in the dictionary. Make them find the answer on their own through the resources that are available around them.

Go Second-Hand Shopping

Overproduction of products is wasting natural resources. You can teach your children to be more environmentally-conscious by purchasing second-hand items. These can be found at a local thrift shop, pawnshop, and even online retailers like eBay. By teaching your children to buy used items, you’re instilling in their minds that they don’t need to buy everything new. Rather, they can get the same enjoyment out of an item even if someone else had it first.

Help Them Understand by Asking Questions

Questions are a great way to help encourage your child to think through their situation and arrive at a viable solution. It’s very common for children to get hung up on a simple problem due to the phrasing of it. By asking your child questions, you can help them to reframe the problem in their mind and overcome that initial mind block.

Ask Their Help to Plan

Resourcefulness is all about finding solutions from various sources and being able to act on them. To help further your child’s resourcefulness, ask them to help you plan.

Whether it’s a day trip to a state park or a cross-country vacation, it doesn’t really matter. Just have them sit down with you and help plan. They can determine routes, pick places to visit, and so forth. By actively working on planning, they’ll be learning new skills of how to be resourceful for different questions.

Resourcefulness is a skill that every child should be taught from a young age up. The above are four great ways that you can instill the idea of resourcefulness in your child. Just be sure to be consistent in your methods and allow them time to learn.
