The Family Home: 6 Ways to Spruce It Up

October 28, 2020 by Pam Maynard

You love your home; there’s no question about it. But living in the same place for so long means you might get a little too comfortable with everything. There’s nothing wrong with comfort, of course, but it can make you feel like This Is It, and some homeowners may want something more. If this sounds at all familiar, it could be a sign that you should spruce up your family home, whether a little or a lot.

The Family Home: 6 Ways to Spruce It Up

Rearrange the Furniture

Sometimes, sprucing up the home is as simple as rearranging the furniture, and you’d be surprised at how effective it can be. If you’ve lived in your home for a while now, you probably think you have the perfect setup, but this might not be true.

By rearranging your furniture, you can open up space and make the house feel larger without adding an extension. You can also move things around to make the most of the natural light, which will also make the home feel bigger, and this will also improve your mood, bringing positive vibes into your home.

Mix Up the Decor

When decorating your house for the first time, you knew which paintings or ornaments needed to go where. Some were better in the living room, whereas others were better in the dining room or bedroom. However, if you want to spruce up your home and stay within your budget, you needn’t purchase new portraits or ornaments.

Instead, you can mix up the decor and move things around. If you’ve got house plants, they might be better off on your dining room shelf than hidden in the living room corner. Plants would match great if you have a beautiful wooden table in the dining room, like one from anne-quinn.com/product-category/dining-room-furniture/dining-tables/.  If you’ve got photos from family vacations, find somewhere to show them off, rather than keeping them in the hallway where you rarely get to see them.

Let Nature In

House plants are big nowadays, so there’s no reason to ignore the trend any longer. These plants can add some character to your home, give you something to do when they need watering, and improve air quality. The more plants you buy, the more alive your home will feel, which is always a good thing.

Furthermore, you can add bird feeders to the windowsills to give you something pleasant to wake up to every morning. The sight of a little birdy having a snack right outside your window can make those frost winter mornings a little more enjoyable.

Fix Or Upgrade

There’s likely plenty of items in your house that have seen better days. If you want to fall in love with your home again, you have the choice to fix them or upgrade them. Fixing is more economical and sustainable, but brand new furniture from BFD is equally alluring, especially if you want to give your home a total makeover.

You might want to find a balance between these two options. Fix the smaller things like a fresh coat of paint on the door frames, and replace your old and battered cabinets with something that can stand the test of time.

Go Through Your Storage

You would be amazed at how many cool things you can find in your storage. These are things you have almost certainly forgotten about, but they can add something to the home that you know you’ve been sorely missing.

Here, you’ll find items that were donated by your grandparents long ago, and while they may not have been right for you then, they could be the perfect addition to your home right now. These items are usually unique, so no one else will have them, and this is much better than shopping at a regular old store for something new.

Organize The Clutter

Every home has clutter. There is not a lot that anyone can do about this. But while you might have had a solution to this clutter, there will come the point where it spills over into the home. Now, there are things in the wrong place, and you feel you cannot keep the house tidy no matter how hard you try.

Decluttering your home is the only way you can overcome this. While it may be daunting, get the family involved, and take a weekend to go through everything. You’ll soon feel you’re able to breathe again.

Welcome Home

Often, it just takes something small here or there to help you fall in love with your home all over again. Whether it’s a change as minor as rearranging the furniture or something more substantial, like refreshing your bed or dining room table, you’ll find that there is plenty of life left in your home, and you will feel you’ve only just moved in all over again.
