4 Tips for Baby-Proofing a New Home

June 16, 2020 by Pam Maynard

You have finally moved into your dream home with your family, but your new home is not ready for your bundle of joy. Your baby is going to be crawling and walking before you know it, and they are going to be curious about their surroundings. Unfortunately, your baby may attempt to grab items or explore areas that are not safe for them. It is important to keep your baby safe around the clock, and you can use the following tips to baby-proof your new home.

4 Tips for Baby-Proofing a New Home

Keep Out of Reach

Start by placing everything your baby is not supposed to touch out of their reach. This includes medications, cleaners, wires, and small or sharp objects. Remember, these items can pose a threat to their health and well-being. You also want to move glass, ceramic, and other fragile items out of their reach before your baby can damage them.

Invest in Baby Gates

If you are a first-time parent, you are going to find baby gates to be a lifesaver in your new home. You want to place a baby gate in as many entrances as possible, including the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room. It is very important to place baby gates on staircases to keep your baby from exploring the stairs. You can even find baby gates designed for porches.

Latches and Locks

There are many luxury homes that feature an open floor plan, which makes it easier to keep track of your baby. However, you may not be able to place a baby gate at every entrance in your home. It is best to invest in enough child-proof latches for all your cabinets, drawers and appliances. You also want to close and lock any rooms that your baby should not enter, such as the bathroom.

4 Tips for Baby-Proofing a New Home

Cover Exposed Outlets

Exposed outlets are inevitable in most homes, but they can be very dangerous for your baby. Luckily, you can find covers for the outlets on your walls, power strips and unplugged appliances. Most outlet covers are designed with the safety of babies and children in mind. The covers keep your baby from sticking their little fingers and toys into the outlets.

It only takes a few seconds for your baby to get into something that can cause illness or injury, so you want to take precautions before your little one is mobile. This way, you are prepared when they inevitably get into everything around them. If you take the time to baby-proof your new home, you can keep them safe for years to come.
