How to Teach Your Kids Safe Practices and Behaviors on the Internet

December 21, 2019 by Pam Maynard

There’s a lot of information that’s available on the internet. Keeping your kids safe while still allowing them the freedom to use the internet as a tool can be difficult. Here are some of the strategies that you can use in order to teach your kids good practices while they’re online.

How to Teach Your Kids Safe Practices and Behaviors on the Internet

Model Good Behavior

You have to be a good example for your kids in your online activities. This could include choosing to not overshare everything about your life and the amount of time that your spend surfing the web. Your kids are little sponges and will start to exhibit the same type of behavior that you model for them. Having a conversation with your kids about the downfalls that can occur if they don’t protect themselves online is a good way to get things going.

Set Limits

Having limits on the amount of time that your kids are allowed to spend on their devices helps to keep them engaged. For example, establishing a rule that devices aren’t allowed at the dinner table or during family time works to your benefits. Talking to your kids about the things that they’re learning at school and what’s going on in their lives keeps you more aware of any ongoing problems. It’s the perfect time to discuss solutions at your kitchen table with the whole family.

Select Your Provider

You have a wide range of internet options for you and your family to choose from. There are plenty of providers available that provide high speed internet for rural Phoenix, AZ, and in other areas. This will allow you to find the right one that will work for the needs of your family. Some providers allow you to establish profiles for the members of your household that’s based on their age. Another thing to consider is setting up parental controls so that you can monitor the sites that your kids are visiting in order to keep them safe and keep tabs on their behavior.

Use Software Effectively

There’s more than just parental controls that can be put into place to protect your kids. Tracking and alert software can also be installed so that you’ll have a better idea about the sites that your kids are visiting and the things that they’re posting to social media. It’s also a good idea to be friends with your kids on their social media platforms to aid in your monitoring efforts. A heads up on issues can be a jumping off point for behavior correction.

Safety is a top concern when you have kids. Use these methods to help your kids stay safe even when they’re navigating the digital world.
