4 Activities That Inspire Compassion and Care in Kids and Teens

January 27, 2019 by Pam Maynard

Kids and teens can learn to become better people from an early age by engaging in certain activities that foster a deeper sense of compassion for others. These activities will give your son or daughter the chance to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and learn more about the trials and tribulations of other people in the world. Here are four activities that are known to engender compassion and care in kids and teens.

4 Activities That Create Compassion and Care in Kids and Teens

Food Bank Volunteering

Spending time working in a food bank is a great way for young people to gain more appreciation for what they have while helping others who are less fortunate. Food banks often need people to serve meals to others or stock food shelves for people who need free groceries. Many food banks are especially in need of volunteers during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, and your son or daughter can spend some time doing a good deed.

Home Building

Certain charities allow young people to help with building new homes for the poor and those who’ve lost their homes to natural disasters. Even younger children can perform light construction while being supervised to ensure their safety. In addition to assisting with the construction of homes, youth volunteers can help raise money and lead education programs to encourage more interest in the charity from the public.

Care for the Elderly

Senior citizens often need to move into retirement communities or nursing homes for ongoing aged care for the elderly. Your child can visit these centers to provide a morale boost and make new friends. Simply reading books or playing games with a senior can brighten their day. Some facilities also allow children to stage plays or play music to entertain senior residents. Your child may even have the opportunity to learn some history by listening to stories of seniors who’ve experienced some of life’s most profound events.

Animal Shelter Volunteering

It’s not just people who benefit from charitable efforts. Dogs, cats and other animals can also be helped by volunteers. Animal rescue shelters work in rehabilitating animals that have been neglected or abused so that they can be adopted, and your child can assist with the effort. From feeding and grooming to playing with the animals, there are many ways that your son or daughter can be a benefit to an animal shelter.

As a parent, you want to raise a child who’s both responsible and compassionate so that they become decent members of society. By helping others while they’re young, your son or daughter will have an easier time learning to respect the people around them.
