How to Tackle the Inevitable Germs That Come Home with Your Kids

September 25, 2018 by Pam Maynard

You and your children might face some uncertainty when it’s time for them to return to school. However, one sure thing they will face is interaction with kids that can spread germs. Because kids can bring these germs home with them, it’s a good idea to have some strategies in place that can help you keep your home germ-free and your kids healthy. This guide will take you through some of those strategies.

How to Tackle the Inevitable Germs That Come Home with Your Kids

Eat a Rainbow of Foods

Once symptoms start to set in, it’s important to make sure your child gets good nutrition. Foods that are rich in nutrients can help the body’s immune system combat the effects of the germs, while unhealthy foods can exacerbate the symptoms. In addition, good nutrition might help your child deal with any allergy problems if they are present.

Get a Good Night’s Rest

Most kids require a minimum of eight hours of sleep per night to maintain their strength. Depending on their ages and other factors, some kids might need as many as 12 hours of sleep in a cycle. It’s a good idea to make sure your kids stick to a regular sleeping schedule that doesn’t change often. You should consider implementing a calming routine just before bedtime. We recommend deactivating electronic devices that might wake them.

Know the Treatment Options

Sometimes, germs can get the best of even the most resilient children. If your child brings home germs from school, it is possible that they will trigger a reaction that could lead to a more acute illness. Such an illness can lead to infections, dehydration, a sore throat, or the flu. If you know the urgent care centers in your area, they can help you deal with any illnesses that result from school germs and offer cold treatments.

Wash Their Hands

It’s important to help kids wash their hands properly. You can use this time to teach the kids the best way to wash their hands thoroughly by themselves if they are old enough. Basic soap and water that you work into a lather for at least 20 seconds can greatly reduce the spread of most germs. However, we recommend avoiding too much hand sanitizer. It kills various germs but can also eliminate good bacteria your body can use to fight off infections. Keep in mind that germs hide in various places on the human body.

These tips should help you and your kids combat at least some of the germs they might bring home after the school day. Please feel free to add your own tips for dealing with germs in the next section.
