3 Building Blocks for a Fun and Easy Birthday Party

July 29, 2018 by Pam Maynard

A birthday, no matter how old you are, is a cause for celebration. Even if it’s just an excuse to indulge yourself for a day, a birthday shouldn’t be overlooked. When it comes to planning a birthday party, however, whether for yourself or a family member, things can get a little more complicated. After all, when you start inviting guests, the complexity and the cost tend to increase quickly. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep any birthday party simple that still allow for plenty of fun to be had. Here are a few ideas to keep everything on-budget and on-style the next time you throw a birthday bash.

3 Building Blocks for a Fun and Easy Birthday Party

Time It Right

One of the biggest costs you’ll face when hosting a birthday party is food. If you schedule the birthday party over the lunch or dinner hours, your guests are going to expect to have, well, lunch or dinner. Feeding that many people a full meal, however, can quickly get expensive and complicated. That’s why it’s a great idea to schedule any party between lunch and dinner, from about 1:00 to no later than 5:00, to ensure you don’t cross over any meal times. With the food taken care of, all you need to offer is some cake and ice cream, and everyone will be totally fine.

Add Some Color

Especially if you’re hosting a kid’s birthday party, you want the atmosphere to be festive and unique. Guests can come to your home to mingle any time, but the opportunity to get together for a birthday is a unique treat. Therefore, it’s important to dress up your home a little bit, and one great way to do this is to add some pops of color. Of course, birthday balloons make this decorating tip inexpensive and easy, allowing you to add some fun decorations without breaking the bank. Other easy ideas include crepe paper, confetti, and any other common decor items that are inexpensive yet brightly colored.

Let Them Eat (Your) Cake

Whether or not you decide to feed your guests a full meal, one thing that will always be expected at a birthday party is some type of birthday cake. To be sure, birthday cakes purchased at a store look great and (usually) taste pretty good, too. However, they can also be quite expensive, especially if you add any type of custom elements to them. That’s why making your own cake can help simplify your birthday party preparations. A boxed cake mix takes almost no effort or time to prepare and typically costs only about 10-20% of the price of a store-bought cake. Plus, you have more control over the flavors you use in your finished product, allowing you to get exactly what your taste buds are dreaming of.

Don’t Compare

Of course, the best way to keep your planning simple and your costs low is to do your own thing instead of comparing to everyone else. Some people go all out when it comes to birthday parties. While that’s perfectly okay, it’s certainly not the best approach for everyone. Just do what’s best for you and your family, whatever that ends up looking like. After all, down the road, your family won’t remember the colors of the streamers or the flavor of the cake. All they’ll remember is the time they got to spend together celebrating someone special.
