Five Stereotypes About Going to the Dentist

March 20, 2018 by Pam Maynard

Go to the dentist. It is that simple. Dentists recommend that everyone visits the dentist twice a year for a checkup and cleaning, but many people avoid making an appointment. There are lots of misconceptions about dentists and dentistry that prevent people from getting the care they need. However, most of these misconceptions are untrue and based on stereotypes. Here are five stereotypes about going to the dentist that aren’t always true:

Five Stereotypes About Going to the Dentist

1. Getting your teeth cleaned hurts

A regular dental cleaning shouldn’t hurt, even if your teeth aren’t in great shape. An experienced dentist or dental hygienist will know how to avoid causing pain, and they’ll listen to you if you tell them that something hurts. Your mouth may feel a little sore after the appointment, but pain during cleaning isn’t normal. If there is a pain, dentists usually ask their assistants to apply medicine to numb your mouth. This numbing allows you to get your teeth worked on without feeling the pain.

2. Dentists enjoy causing pain

Some movies and TV shows feature dentists who enjoy inflicting pain or discomfort, but this is an entirely untrue stereotype. Dentists choose their career path because they want to help people, not because they want to hurt people. If you’re anxious about visiting the dentist, they’ll do their best to alleviate your fears. According to All Smiles Dentistry, “new technologies allow us to detect dental concerns at early stages, treat your dental issues with precision, and provide stunning and customized restorations.”

3. Your dentist will judge you based on your teeth

Dentists are highly-trained professionals who want to help you, not criticize you. Throughout their careers, they’ve seen a wide variety of dental issues, so nothing should surprise them anymore. They understand that most people don’t have perfect dental hygiene habits, and they just want to help you maintain or improve your dental health.

Five Stereotypes About Going to the Dentist

4. A checkup is too expensive

You may not want to pay for cleaning or checkup, but a procedure to fill a cavity or remove a damaged tooth will be much more expensive. If you get regular checkups, your dentist can give you advice on how to keep caring for your teeth, and they can look for warning signs of more severe issues. Paying a little for preventive care is better than paying for an elaborate surgery.

5. Having your mouth numbed is annoying

Dental anxiety is common, but going to the dentist shouldn’t be stressful. Your appointment for dental crowns should be comfortable and stress-free. The negative stereotypes associated with dentists are usually not right, but you can also speak to your dentist about your concerns, and you both can come up with a plan to make the visit as comfortable as possible.

Go to the dentist. It is an important part of keeping your teeth clean and healthy. Dentists are there to help you and provide support. If something needs to be fixed, they are there for you and make things comfortable. There is no need to be afraid.
