5 Strategies for Helping a Loved One Recover from an Eating Disorder

March 12, 2018 by Pam Maynard

You’ve witnessed your loved one’s unhealthy eating habits, and you’ve seen them affect him in negative ways. Maybe you thought there was nothing you could do and felt completely helpless about it. The truth is, there’s a lot you can do. Below are five, special strategies you can use to help him successfully overcome his eating disorder.

5 Strategies for Helping a Loved One Recover from an Eating Disorder

Be Informed

First of all, you’ll want to go out of your way to learn everything you can about eating disorders. You should find out, for example, what it is that leads your loved one to engage in this type of behavior and what challenges he’s likely to encounter on the road to recovery. Also, you’ll need to learn the proper ways of helping him deal with these hurdles. By learning more about eating disorders, you’ll acquire a better understanding of what he’s going through and be able to offer useful assistance.

Be a Good Listener

A good listener is hard to find for many people. What your loved one needs the most right now is to have someone, who’ll make him feel heard and understood. He should never be made to feel like he’s being judged. Listening to him will make him feel encouraged and inspire him to follow through with his recovery like nothing else will.

Speak Well of Yourself

Do you sometimes make less than ideal remarks about your own weight? If you share the same household, your loved one’s hearing everything you say. It’ll remind him of his own perceived flaws and make him regress. You need to be careful of what you say in front of him.

Seek Support

A person with no support can offer little, if any, support of his own. That being said, you should work toward having a support system. Then, you’ll be in a better position to give support to your loved one. The caring professionals at Center for Change understand how difficult it can be to seek treatment for yourself or a loved one. Your encouragement may be just what your loved one needs to seek out other sources of support, as well.

5 Strategies for Helping a Loved One Recover from an Eating Disorder

Find Ways to Make Him Happy

You can try keeping him busy with several, fun-filled activities. This will take his mind off of his struggle for a bit. Also, he’ll learn that there are ways to stay happy and satisfied that don’t require him to put his health at risk.

There’s certainly a way out, but it’s not always easy to find. By putting these ideas into practice, you can help your loved one overcome his eating disorder sooner rather than later. He has what it takes to win this battle, and you just need to let him know that.
