Every soon-to-be mommy goes through a nesting phase where they feel like cleaning and organizing everything around the house. It can be an overwhelming urge, but also exciting when deciding how to decorate your little one’s nursery.
Every nursery has basic needs such as a crib, a changing table or station, and a dresser. However, there are an abundance of adorable -and functional- accessories to add to your nursery. Many can be customized or hand-made to add your own special touch. When it comes to babies, you often don’t realize what you need until the moment you need it, so here are some accessory ideas to get you started.
Spinning Mobile
A spinning mobile is a must-have accessory for any baby nursery! Mobiles come in many different colors and themes, some ranging from extremely elegant and expensive, to simple hand-made crafts. Many mobiles may even come prepackaged with an entire nursery bedding set or are made to match a room theme. Not only are mobiles classical and whimsical, they also serve to relax babies to sleep by slowly rotating and playing sweet lullabies.
Diaper Holder
Many moms don’t consider this decorative accessory a necessity until they’re desperately trying to hold the baby on the changing table while simultaneously reaching for a diaper in an inconvenient drawer. Keeping diapers on the table also has its own difficulties when squirmy little legs keep kicking all over the place. This is where a quality diaper holder comes in. Most come with a loop for hanging and can be mounted directly to the wall next to your changing station, or they can be hung on a door handle.
Toy Hammock
Toy hammocks are adorable, and even easy to make if you have sewing experience. Babies tend to get a lot of stuffed animals and small toys at baby showers or first birthdays and a soft hammock that can be mounted up high in the corner of baby’s room is a great storage solution. You can put them at baby’s level for easy to reach cleanup as well.
Baby Shadow Box
If you are pregnant or soon-to-be adopting, you may not have much to fill a baby shadow box right away, but you can still start one! A shadow box is a mountable case with a transparent front, perfect for displaying all of baby’s early memories. You can fill it with ultrasound pictures, baby’s first hat or onesie, baby’s hospital bracelets, birth announcements, etc. For couples adopting unplanned pregnancies, many agencies will put couples in contact with the birth mother. You can coordinate a shadow box together, depending on if the mother chooses to continue contact after the child is born.
Personalized Quilt
Personalized quilts are extra special nursery accessories and something your baby can keep until they have their own family. You can have one made or if you have a sewing machine, you can make it yourself! You may want to visit a fabric store and pick an assortment of fabrics that match your nursery theme, or if your baby is a few months old, you may want to use his or her old onesies to preserve them in a blanket your child will have their entire life. Due to the risk of SIDS, it isn’t recommended to allow your baby to sleep with a blanket until they are at least a year old, so this is one nursery adornment that would look amazing over a rocking or gliding chair until your baby is old enough to enjoy it.
There are countless adorable accessories that can be added to a baby’s nursery, but you’ll soon find the most advantageous accessories are stylish and functional. They can become even more special if you’re able to customize or make them yourself for your little one to cherish throughout their life.
