The American Love Story With DIY

January 16, 2026 by Pam Maynard

The United States of America is built around the idea that individuals can start with nothing and create their own success alone. A self-made man, as coined by Senator Henry Clay in 1832, doesn’t owe his success to anyone else but himself. Why is DIY so central to the culture of the country?

From the very start, even since the Founding Fathers of the United States, the concept of self-made has been present in our history. Benjamin Franklin is widely considered the quintessential self-made man with regard to his humble background and the path to his wealth. As such, he has become the embodiment of the American Dream, the ability to shape your own life and success.

Nowadays, we may have a more nuanced understanding of it, as more and more people know that hard work and perseverance do not necessarily lead to success. In fact, without the support of others and without some financial backup, the self-made man (or woman) as we dream of it isn’t possible.

But, something remains: The determination to do it yourself. From self-made to me-made is the latest iteration of the American Dream in 2026. We may not make it big, but we can make it ourselves, DIY, and this is perhaps the most important lesson we’ve learned from history, and the one that we continue to apply in our day-to-day lives.

Americans love a good DIY story.

DIY Tools

Be honest: how many tools do you own?

Most households have so many tools that they swap the traditional toolbox for a full storage solution inside a shed or a garage. We love tools of all sorts, whether hammers, screwdrivers, saws, or everything about power tools and measuring tools. There’s a good reason for it. Most of us have needed to do some work in our homes at some point. Perhaps, you’ve been fixing the fence or assembling furniture. No matter what, the fact remains that you have all the tools you need, and you probably intend to grow your tool collection further.

We don’t just have tools, we also have the right tools for the job. In fact, most US DIYers tend to shop at the same place as the pros, checking on deals at plumbersstock.com and wondering which one to buy next.

With that in mind, there’s no doubt that we are, indeed, a nation of DIY enthusiasts.

Upcycling and Recycling Family Craft

We love to make stuff, not so much because we can’t buy it, but because there’s a sense of joy and ownership in making it yourself. That is probably why craft projects are one of our favorite activities of all time.

Simple craft projects are also an opportunity for parents to encourage young children to discover DIY and build up their skills. We often start with basic things, such as turning a tin can into a cute flower pot, which can teach kids not only to recycle but also to care for plants.

We involve our children in many DIY activities to ensure they can, just like we are, become me-made people too. Thankfully, the year is packed with events that help us bring the kids onboard with accessible recycling-based craft:

  • Turning cardboard rolls into simple decorative seasonal items (Easter, Christmas, and other decorations)
  • Turning newspapers into wrapping paper with potato stamps
  • Turning empty jars into fairy light decor
  • Etc.

Me-Made Home Essentials

Nothing beats the joy of using something you’ve made yourself. But when it comes to families with young children, it’s more than a joy. In some cases, it’s deeply connected to health concerns. Indeed, a lot of products we use around the home can be harmful to the sensitive skin of children. The cleaning products you use around ht ebathroom and kitchen, for example, contain a lot of harsh chemicals. Even your favorite soap may also contain chemicals that could lead to irritation and inflammation for little ones.

So, more and more parents have been looking at a way of introducing safe products into the household. This naturally led to going back to the basics and making our own products using safe household ingredients, using recipes from places like vileda.com:

  • All-purpose cleaner with white vinegar, water, and essential oil
  • Oven cleaner with baking soda and water
  • Dish product with baking soda and borax
  • Degreaser with white vinegar, lemon juice, castile soap, and water

Additionally, we’ve been going back to making our own soaps for the bathroom, which means we can control what comes into contact with our skin.

Made to Fit

We may not all be building our furniture from scratch, as it takes more than just tools, but we are confident enough to build things we can’t find in stores.

The most obvious example is when it comes to awkward spaces around the home. We all have that tiny, weird nook in the living room or in the bedroom that doesn’t fit anything. Rather than letting it go to waste, more and more Americans are taking the matter into their own hands and turning it into a useful spot. We enjoy building simple shelving systems, made to measure to fit our awkward nooks.

When it comes to large spaces that would otherwise be left unused, we are creative and resourceful enough togive them the makeover they’ve always needed to shine:

  • Turning the area under the stairs into a cozy pet home with a homemade pet bed
  • Creating a functional home office station with a self-made narrow worktop/desk
  • Building an easy bench by the window for your reading corner

Sure, we may not all be ready to build up our homes from scratch, but we use DIY to turn our houses and apartments into the home of our dreams, and that is already a big win.

There’s something about the American culture that drives us to build our own paths. While the myth of the self-made man (or woman) has long been replaced by the new me-made enthusiasm, Americans everywhere love to DIY their way through life. Perhaps, this is, after all, what the American Dream is truly about: a dream where you create your own comfort and joy with your own hands.
