🎃 How to Keep Your Pets Safe (and Happy!) This Halloween
Halloween is one of my favorite times of year — the costumes, the decorations, the candy (okay, mostly the candy). And yes, I’ll admit it… I can’t resist dressing up at least one of my dogs for the occasion. 🐶👻 We usually head downtown for some spooky fun, and it’s always a blast seeing all the pups in their costumes! But with all the excitement, it’s super important to make sure to keep your pets safe and stress-free.
If your pets are anything like mine, Halloween can be both fun and a bit overwhelming. With the doorbell ringing nonstop, people in unusual costumes, and candy tempting them from every direction, there’s a lot happening! Before you head out for trick-or-treating or the next costume contest, here are a few simple tips to help keep your pets safe and comfortable this spooky season. If you’re thinking about dressing your dog up this year, these tips will guide you on what to do and what to avoid!
🕸️ 1. Choose Costumes Wisely
Pet costumes are adorable — no question! But make sure your pet’s costume fits comfortably and doesn’t restrict movement, vision, or breathing. Always do a “test run” at home first. If your dog looks miserable or starts trying to wiggle out of it, it might be time to rethink the outfit. Sometimes a simple Halloween bandana or themed collar is just as festive (and much more comfortable).

🍬 2. Keep Candy Out of Reach
Chocolate, sugar-free gum, and many candies are toxic to pets. With so many treats around, it’s easy for curious noses to find something they shouldn’t. Keep all candy bowls and treat bags up high and remind kids not to share candy with pets, this is to keep your pets safe — no matter how cute those puppy eyes are!
👻 3. Watch the Door
If you’re handing out candy, be mindful of how often your door opens. Excited or anxious pets can easily slip outside unnoticed. Consider keeping your dogs in a quiet room away from the front door, with their favorite bed, toy, or even a little background music to help them relax.
🕯️ 4. Be Careful with Decorations
Flickering candles, glow sticks, and dangling decorations can all pose risks to pets. Dogs might chew on cords or decorations, and cats… well, they love to knock things over. Opt for battery-operated candles and keep decorations out of reach to avoid accidents.
🌙 5. Stay Visible if You’re Out and About
If your Halloween adventures take you and your dog out after dark (like our stroll downtown every year), make sure your pup is easily visible. Use a reflective leash, collar, or even a light-up tag. It not only looks cute but keeps them safe when crossing streets or walking near cars.
🦴 6. Don’t Forget to Treat Your Dog for Being a Good Ghoul!
Halloween is full of treats for humans, but our pups deserve a few of their own too! 🍪 Reward your furry friend for good behavior — whether they’re rocking a costume, walking calmly downtown, or greeting trick-or-treaters like a pro. Homemade dog cookies are a fun (and safe!) way to include them in the festivities.
I love making these DIY Banana and Squash Dog Treats — some even look like little ghosts, which makes them extra festive! 👻 They’re easy to make, pet-safe, and always a hit with my crew. 🧡 7. Keep Calm and Have Fun
At the end of the day, Halloween should be fun — for both you and your furry friend! Keep an eye on their body language and energy levels. If they seem stressed or overstimulated, it’s okay to cut the night short and head home for some cozy cuddles.
Halloween with pets can be a total treat when safety comes first. With a little preparation and extra care, your four-legged family members can join in the fun without any frightful mishaps. So grab those costumes, prep the treats, and make it a night full of happy howls and wagging tails! 🐾🎃
