3 Reasons Why You Need Regular Dental Checkups

January 30, 2024 by Pam Maynard

Many people skip dental appointments, but the truth is that maintaining proper oral health is essential for your overall health and well-being. However, regular dental checkups are not just for when you have a dental issue or an emergency. Your appointment can help you discover any oral issues you might have and prevent them from getting serious. This post outlines some important reasons why you should avoid skipping your dental appointments.

Prevention of tartar, cavities and plaque

If cavities are left untreated, they can cause tooth infections such as tooth abscesses, which can destroy your tooth pulp, and in severe cases, it may require your entire tooth to be removed. Cavities occur when there is a build-up or accumulation of plaque and tartar that results in the receding action of your tooth enamel.

When this happens, tiny holes are created in your tooth, and this is known as a cavity. There are a number of causes for this condition, such as eating too many processed foods, having a lot of sugar-filled drinks, and taking in highly acidic food and drink. These can all result in tooth decay, which slowly erodes your enamel.

Treatment for gum disease and bleeding

You should keep in mind that gum disease progresses slowly, and most of the time, it’s painless at the early stages. Therefore, if you regularly skip dental visits, you may not even be aware that you have this issue building up. By the time you realize it, it might be too late.

Skipping dental visits have no upsides, and the downsides can be very detrimental. You could lose your teeth from gum disease because this condition causes the deterioration of not only your gums but also the bone structure, which means you could eventually require dental implants. When the bone that holds your teeth begins to weaken, eventually, your teeth can loosen from its base.

Most people experience gum diseases when plaque settles for a very long time. One way this happens is when you refuse to brush your teeth and floss regularly. When plaque hardens, it progresses to tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist.

Reduce tooth sensitivity

Have you been experiencing tooth sensitivity lately? Then, you need to contact your dentist and schedule a visit immediately. This sensitive feeling might be a sign of a worn-out enamel. A sensitive tooth can occur due to a number of factors. These include worn fillings, cracked teeth, and cavities.

12% of persons experience this condition, according to research conducted by the Journal of the American Dental Association. Therefore, checking in with your dentist regularly can help you spot these conditions and treat them faster so they do not escalate into a big issue. For instance, you could have a hole in your teeth that is not visible yet. It might escape your eye but your dentist will most definitely see and help you treat it by giving you the best directions.

When it comes to your dental well-being, the prevention of cavities, gum disease, and plaque should be your number one priority. Maintaining your dental health with regular dental checkups is the best step you can take to avoid more serious health issues further down the line.
