5 Essential Dental Care Tips For Your Children

August 6, 2016 by Pam Maynard

You have to guide you children for them to have the best dental health. Dental care and good oral hygiene are very important in ensuring that your children have beautiful smiles. This will also help you in ensuring that you do not use a lot of money on treating preventable dental problems. The following tips promote good dental health in children:

3 Ways to Help your Children Relax on their First Visit to the Dentist

  1. Brushing teeth

Cavities and gum disease are resultant of poor oral hygiene. Children should brush their teeth at least twice daily for good dental and oral health. For the best results and generally  good brushing habits, have your little one spit out the toothpaste rather than swallow and always be there to supervise their brushing especially when less than 8 years of age.

  1. Use fluoride

Do not have children brush their teeth with just anything. Have fluoride toothpaste or fluorinated water. Fluoride is a mineral that prevents tooth decay. Progress of cavities and tooth decay is limited when one uses fluoride. Basically, fluoride reduces bacterial ability to synthesize acids that corrode teeth and also prevents mineral loss on the enamel. Lost mineral on teeth are also replaced with use of fluoride.

  1. Try sealants

Talk to the best Summerbrook dentist in Aurora on your child’s or siblings’ dental health and ask for sealants. Sealants are effective remedies against cavities. How do they work? The thin plastic coatings, sealants, are applied on tooth chewing surfaces of molars and/ or back teeth.

This is an effective remedy because normal chewing surfaces have pits and are generally rough. This natural feature/ attributes provide good environment for bacteria to breed and cause cavities. With the sealants, a barrier will be created protecting teeth and also preventing food and bacteria from entrapment.

5 Dental Care Tips

  1. Monitor food

In-take of sugary or starchy foods contributes to decay and destruction of the teeth enamel. This happen s because the sugary foods will be converted into acid by bacteria. The acids will eat away the enamel.

Saliva has protective abilities against this but frequently eating makes this natural protection minimal and even ineffective. Monitoring what is eaten will help in ensuring that the teeth are well cared for. Limit intake for sweet treats like candy, sweets, sodas and juices. Teach the young ones not to eat before bedtime, especially after brushing their teeth.

  1. Dental checkups

For the bets dental and oral health, kids should be taken to see the dentist regularly. Kids and adults dread dental visits but it is a very important visit that you must make. Your dentist will check for tooth decay and remove plaque if there is any.

Your little ones can then be shown how to clean their teeth well. Varnish or fluoride gel may also be applied by the doctor if necessary. To have good oral and dental hygiene through to adulthood, children should visit the dentist at least twice a year or more as you deem appropriate.

In conclusion, dental health in children is very important. Those beautiful smiles should be maintained at all times as well as good breath. Brushing and/ or flossing should therefore be encouraged to prevent tooth decay, cavities and gum diseases.
