How Hearing Loss Affects Your Mental Health

January 24, 2024 by Pam Maynard

Have you noticed that sounds around you have started to be more muffled or unintelligible? Having a problem making sense of conversations you’re involved in? It can be a lonely experience, dealing with hearing loss all by yourself, and it can even affect your mental health. But you should know that you’re not alone in this and that others are going through the same thing too.

Hearing Loss Can Cause Anxiety

Even if you believe that your hearing is still as sharp as ever, it couldn’t hurt to get a hearing test to see if you could receive the benefits of hearing aids. But even making an appointment for a hearing test can lead some people to have anxiety. They worry that their hearing is going, that it will get worse, and that there’s no cure for getting one’s hearing back. However, there can be preventative steps taken to ensure that your hearing doesn’t get worse.

Hearing Loss Can Cause Depression

Studies have shown that those with hearing loss are at a higher risk of developing depression and experiencing suicidal thoughts. This is because hearing loss can instill a feeling of isolation since a person can no longer be autonomous as they find new ways to cope with these new circumstances.

Hearing Loss Can Cause Cognitive Decline

When a person starts to experience loss of hearing, cognitive decline can rapidly increase, raising the risk of other conditions like Alzheimer’s condition. There are several theories as to why this might be. One is that the brain is working harder to interpret the world in a new way without sound, hearing loss can discourage the person from being social, leading to further isolation, and parts of the brain may shrink since they’re receiving fewer signals from the outside world.

Hearing Loss Can Cause Sleep Problems

Impaired hearing can definitely affect the quality of your sleep. Reduced quality of sleep, in turn, can lead to a whole host of other health problems as well, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Hearing Loss Can Lead To Psychosis

A person may be at risk for psychosis after they start to experience impaired hearing. This is characterized by symptoms of delusions and hallucinations. This is likely caused by disruptions in the brain in the way it perceives and recalls information. The isolation that an individual experiences may also be a cause of psychosis.

Taking Care Of Mental Health And Hearing

That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the signs that you are losing your hearing so that you can do something to prevent it from getting worse. This, in turn, will save to preserve your mental health as well. Some signs you should look out for are:

  • Having difficulty understanding conversations
  • Having difficulty hearing specific sounds
  • Having trouble hearing the television

If you are concerned about your hearing, it’s important that you schedule an appointment with an ear-nose-throat specialist or with your primary healthcare provider to conduct the necessary tests. Hearing loss shouldn’t leave you feeling alone in a room full of people. Speak to a professional today.
