How to Save Money on Your Pennsylvania Phone Bill

January 11, 2024 by Pam Maynard

Business VoIP is a reliable communication system to help your business save money. It comes with enterprise-level features that improve productivity and customer satisfaction. Using traditional landlines requires wiring, which is expensive to add and maintain. However, with a VoIP system, you can plug in your phone and connect to the Internet and still save money on your phone bill.

VoIP turns your internet connection into a way to make phone calls, bypassing traditional telephone charges. VoIP is a convenient and cost-effective option in Newville, PA, whether at home, on the go, or in the office. Many Pennsylvania phone service providers offer residential and business solutions for small to medium-sized companies.

Generally, residential services are simpler and focus on the needs of home users. However, business VoIP services are more advanced, offering call management and productivity features that would usually be add-ons with traditional telecommunications services. Each state has different telecommunication taxes and fees, which can dramatically alter your final monthly rate.

These include the Federal USF fee, Line fees, TRS fees (used to support telecommunications relay for people with hearing or speech disabilities), Excise tax, District Tax and Gross Receipts Tax. You can better understand these fees by asking for price quotes to compare apples to apples.

Ask for a Discount

Very few service providers will automatically reduce your price without you asking. So, be sure to ask and be persistent politely. You might be surprised at how much you can save by simply asking! Business VoIP plans include advanced productivity features that will improve the efficiency of your business. However, this extra functionality can add up.

It’s also important to understand exactly what each provider includes in their advertised price. For example, some providers may charge a Federal Universal Service Fund (USF) fee or state sales tax. Other providers may add on a Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) fee. These fees help pay for services for those with hearing or speech disabilities. You can find these fees listed on each provider’s website.

Likewise, some business VoIP services may also charge for equipment rental. Some providers include this in their advertised price, while others will add it as a separate cost.

Switch to a Hosted Service

Many companies choose hosted VoIP because it can be accessed via the Internet and offers enterprise-level features like auto-attendant, call routing, unified messaging, video conference calls, and more. These services are also scalable, meaning you can add additional phones and users without increasing costs.

Additionally, you can save on wiring costs on your phone bill by using your existing data network for voice and data communications. This eliminates the need for separate networks and reduces maintenance costs. You can even sync your VoIP so that both ring simultaneously when someone calls your office and home phone.

Remember, however, that there are some recovery fees you should be aware of, such as the Federal USF and local sales tax (typically a combination of state and county-level sales taxes). However, these fees are not usually passed on to customers since they aren’t directly related to the services you are receiving. In addition, some providers also incorporate these charges into their per-month rates instead of charging for them on a per-line basis.

Switch to a Virtual Number

As your business grows, traditional landline phone systems can become costly. For example, each new employee requires a dedicated telephone line, which adds up. Additionally, they can be pricey if you want to add more features like call recording, IVRs, and auto attendants.

With VoIP, you can get all these advanced features at a fraction of the cost. The hardware you need for your business phone system is also more affordable with VoIP. Many carriers include VoIP phones and adapters in their monthly rate, so know these fees before deciding.

Moreover, VoIP lets you work wherever you are. For instance, if you’re at a sales conference, your team can still take calls from customers using their virtual numbers. Employees working from home report higher job satisfaction and complete 13% more daily work than their office-based counterparts. Ultimately, this leads to more revenue and more success for your business.
