Self-care: are you doing it, and what exactly does it look like for you? Self-care is basically the act of doing something for yourself that allows you to stop, take time out, and give yourself a little pampering and TLC. Self-care looks different for everyone, and there are hundreds of ways you can fit self-care into your life, from booking beauty treatments with Lavish Beauty rn to taking a spa day, reading a book, or meeting up with friends for a few hours away from your day-to-day life.
However, taking this time for self-care isn’t always as easy as it sounds. While the younger generations are more comfortable with declaring their “me time” and removing distractions to ensure they are looking after themselves, for Millenials, Gen X, and even boomers, it isn’t always quite so easy.
Identify Your Issues
In the first instance, you need to address what is stopping you from putting yourself first. Is it guilt from not being there for your family for a short while? Is it an overwhelming burden of responsibility, a hectic lifestyle, or simply feeling like you aren’t worth it? Whatever is stopping you, address it. Write it down if you need to, and then look for ways to move past it.
Identify Your Best Times
At this stage, it isn’t about doing the self-care activity but more about looking at when the best time to do so would be. Look at your schedule, everything you are juggling, and where you might have free time. And not just one section of time either; a random 10 minutes here and there. You need a consistent schedule you can stick to.
Whether it’s taking a long way home from school, running to grab a coffee and sitting in the car for an extra half an hour before going home on a Monday morning or using your lunch break to read your book every day, hit the gym, or go for a run, find where you have the time and what you can do.
What Make You Feel Better
Self-care is about doing something for you that makes you feel good. It needs to be something you can look forward to doing, not something that becomes another chore you need to do. So take some time to identify what it is that you would look forward to.
Meeting friends for an hour, going to visit your parents, playing a round of golf, going for a swim, or taking an extra nap in bed. Or it can be something different every time, and you simply pull ideas out of a jar to do each time you are able to.
Lastly, you need to prioritize yourself. Self-care isn’t selfish, far from it; it is about taking care of yourself and giving you what you need, not just making sure everyone else has what they need. If you aren’t putting yourself first, you won’t be able to make the changes you need to benefit yourself. Remember, if you aren’t putting yourself first, who else is?
Self-care isn’t something that others carry out because they can; it is something everyone should do because they need it. Bringing a little joy to your life and taking some time for yourself needs to be something you do automatically to help you avoid being overwhelmed and burnt out and allow you to meet the demands of your life.
